Re: The (LA Tech/LSUS) Merger Thread II

Here is the thing. Southern Law School has its purpose. I personally have many friends and relatives that went to Southern, LSU, Loyola and Tulame. Southern is a great place for middle aged folks who had poor grades in their early college years to get a law degree. My grandfather was the last person in the state of LA to pass the bar with out law school. He had a noteworthy career but would not have gotten into LSU, Loyola or Tulane. My Uncle went to Southern out of the military because he knew he couldn't get into LSU. Southern is easier by far and from what I am told you get no true legal education, but it is requirement before you pass the bar. We need a law school North of Alexandria and I would take Southern in a heartbeat.

All I'm saying, is maybe some of the grads heading to LSU might stay in North Louisiana if there was a campus here.

I'd love for Tech to have a Law School, but I think it would require a large endowment to do it right. I'd hate for other programs to suffer because of it.
I so want to agree with you, but after years of watching North-LA snub Tech in favor of the Flagship, I just don't have faith in the local populace that I used to. They will look at SU-Shreve Law like they look at us or LSUS.

LSU's numbers look right down the line...Southern's, unsurprisingly, bear no sembelance of accuracy after the $50 filing fee. LSAT numbers, bar passage rate, grad rate, grants and indebtedness...all are out of whack.

As I said earlier, Southern is not a great law school. Law school is a requirement for being able to take the BAR. I would hope that one in Shreveport would have the autonomy to develop into a real law school but I highly doubt that would happen.

If there had been a law school in the north end of the state I probably would have gotten a law degree. No way possible with all the law schools 4 to 6 hours away. And I wouldn't have cared who ran the school. If passing the bar is like passing the CPA exam you get the education and background you need to sit then you study for the exam. Pretty sure I could have pulled it off.

    Oh well.

The second largest law school alumni base in the 5th and 6th Judicial Districts is Mississippi College. Thats everything east of Monroe. Someone missed the boat in North LA by not putting a law school north of Alexandria.

One doesn't have to attend law school to become a lawyer...just have to pass the BAR exam, er, right?

Pretty sure that's true. But studying all the material without the methodology and structure course work provides is a huge obstacle.

Most states, including Louisiana, require you graduate from an ABA accredited law before you can take the exam. California does not and most states do not have reciprocity for allowing their lawyers to be automatically admitted to their bar. Louisiana doesn't either, but for a whole different reason.

    Thanks.

Actually, the same is true for real estate agency. Have to have 90 hours of pre-license course work from an accredited school, and then pass both the national and state exams. Then, a broker agrees to "hold" your license and you then have 90 days to complete another 12 hours of post-license coursework. Something like that. The requirements are ever-changing. Then you need an annual 12 hrs of CEUs.

The 90 hours is about equal to law school. However, you have to have a BA or BS to get into law school.
