What would the 4 super-conferences look like?

If four 16 team super-conferences were formed today, here is what they might look like.

Big XVI North – Cincinnati, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Notre Dame, Michigan,Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio State, PennsylvaniaState, Pittsburg, Purdue, Syracuse, Wisconsin

Big XVI South – Baylor, Clemson, Florida State, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma,Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas Christian, Texas Tech, West Virginia, VirginiaTech, +3

PAC – Arizona, Arizona State, California, Colorado, OregonState, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Utah, Washington, Washington State, +4

SEC – Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky,LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina,Tennessee, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, Virginia

This scenario is based upon Texas being wealthy enough tokeep the Big XII in place. If it worksout like this, who is added where and why or who do you believe that team wouldbe placed differently and why? ForExample, maybe you think DUKE in the Big North because of basketball.

However, a case can justas easily be made that Texas cannot and thus will go to the PAC along with OU,OSU, and TT as their +4. In that scenario, plug in your choice of whichconference is the 4th super-conference, who will comprise theconference, and state your rational.

The Big 12 schools are supposed to be about to sign the contract that puts the TV rights over to the conference for something like 10-13 years. If that happens, no one's leaving the Big 12. The problem for the PAC is that they have no way to grow without poaching the Big 12. They have a very clear disdain for schools like Fresno, Boise and BYU. There just aren't any teams west of Texas that appeal to the PAC. It's going to be hard for them to grow without doing some kind of crazy "east division" setup. (it would be kind of funny to see them pick up the tobacco road group)

exactly, THIS is why four 16-team conferences does not work. i doubt you will get GT, UNC, Dook, and Md in the PAC-16 :-)

i think the future conference of the teams depends in large part to the order which teams leave.

UNC and Dook won't leave the ACC unless it is completely crumbling (NCSU would jump sooner)

UVA and VT are both tied to the ACC unless it completely falls apart and both have a soft landing spot

FSU will start the dominoes falling. and who we bring with us for #12 will make a BIG difference.

if it is just FSU and Miami (or Clempsun) leaving then i could see that being the end of the shuffling in the power conferences for a while. ACC will still have 12 teams. Big 12 has 12 teams. unless a big name starts showing interest no more movement is readily apparent.

if the big 12 goes to 14 right away and takes FSU, UM, CU, and GT or UL...then you will see dominoes really fall. ESPiN will rewrite the TV contract for the ACC and it will be closer to CUSA bucks than to SEC payouts. suddenly more ACC teams will shop themselves around. if UVA could get interest from the Big 10, look for a split where the SEC gets VT and NCSU while the Big 10 gets UVA, UNC, and Dook. if they can get ND great...if not they take Md. next the Big 12 may go to 16 along with the SEC and Big 10. they will take GT/UL and one more. if Md is in the Big 10, they could add Pitt to restore the WV rivalry...but they would prefer Md (or ND). then you have 3 super-conferences with 16 teams...and the PAC 12 is looking around and sees nobody it is interested in adding.

or my favorite scenario...Big 12 adds FSU, UM, and CU...and sits on an open spot waiting for the next suitor. it knows it can have UL any time it wants, but it wants VT more. VT blinks and jumps to the Big 12 with the rest of us. Big 10 adds UVA and Md (ND still refuses to move). SEC stays pat at 14 with VT off the market. ACC (now down 6 teams) essentially merges with the Big East and adds UCONN, Rutgers, UL, Cincy, USF, and UCF. Houston, SMU, Boise, SDSU, Temple, and Navy make other conference plans while the Big East reverts back to a basketball only league. Houston, SMU, Boise, SDSU go to MWC. temple returns hat in hand to the MAC, Navy stays independent along with Army, ND, and BYU.

lots of 14 team conferences, no 16 team conferences. MWC, CUSA, and Big East/ACC are seen as equals behind the Big 14, PAC 12, SEC and Big 10 (which still refuses to count properly).

Neither do I. The Pac-12 examines culture and academics as well as athletics. BYU is out because of the culture, Boise because of the academics. Not much for the Pac-12 to choose from out there unless Cal Tech starts a football team. They seem to hate Hawaii and Fresno, and I do not think UNLV, New Mexico, CSU, or SDSU makes them feel all warm and fuzzy. Yeah, unless they completely shock us with something totally out of the box, I do not see them expanding unless they can get the Big-12 foursome.

IMHO, I think the SEC can do better than this.
