To those of you who don't remember, when Boise was mulling the decision to go to the Big East last year, there was quite a bit of speculation in the media about the chatter of a Big East - CUSA - MWC three way merger. In some ways, it seems that this intial concept is what wound up triggering the MWC-CUSA merger that never actually materialized.
Now that we're on the "inside" and we know definitively which schools are involved, revisit the super conference idea from last year.
Here would be the workings of a 34-team conference.
"BIG" EAST
UConn
Rutgers
Central Florida
South Florida
Louisville
Cincinnati
East Carolina
Marshall
Florida International
Temple
CENTRAL
UAB
Memphis
Southern Mississippi
Louisiana Tech
Tulane
Rice
Houston
SMU
MOUNTAIN
Tulsa
UTSA
UTEP
Colorado State
Utah State
Air Force
New Mexico
North Texas
WEST
Hawaii
Fresno State
San Jose State
San Diego State
Nevada
UNLV
Boise State
Wyoming
-- Note that Navy is not included in Big East, nor Charlotte and ODU either. There might be more stipulations for those deals.
Market Power? This lineup would feature 5 teams that have participated in a total SEVEN BCS BOWLS
**UL (1), UC (2), UConn (1), Hawaii (1), Boise St. (2)
The league would have FOUR of the TOP TEN DMA's in the U.S.-- and something like 18 of the top 50.
