    Peaches

How'r the peaches looking this year?

I'm headed south to the ancestral estate this weekend, and mom asked if I'd make a side trip through Russ's Town and pick her up a case of Mitcham's finest.

But I'd rather not go out of the way if the pickins are slim. What say you Rustonians?

Went down to New Orleans recently and was pleased to see Ruston Peaches in several dishes on the Commanders Palace menu.

I have no idea if they're selling them in full force yet. I do know the Leader said they were fewer, smaller, and sweeter because of the warm winter we had.

got a box to take down to a client last week and they are without a doubt a lot smaller right now. friend that works there said they had called other growers to see if they were experiencing the same thing and they were. Get there early to get in line.

I went to Ruston last weekend to get some and they were sold out... Had to go to Yak's across town to get some.

IIRC, a few years ago there was a story out that some disease was threatening to wipe out the peach trees in Ruston for good. Have things changed?

Yea, I remember that, something to do with the root system.

If I remember correctly, there was a fungicide that would take care of the situation but the EPA wouldn't let the growers use it or allow it to be produced. Hopefully some pressure was brought to bear to change that stance or an alternative was found.

I left Ruston a year ago, but one of the last things I did was go visit Mitchams. They said the disease is still running, but seems to have slowed down for unknown reasons. The chemicals needed remain banned with no progress in approving them. They are still losing trees every year.

i would bet theres only about half the trees that there used to be. I honestly dont think it'll be more than 5 years before Mitchams wont exist anymore as we know it.

    Re: Peaches

Our hunting lease is out there by Mitchams and it has been sad to watch the production fall off over the past 5-10 years. Hopefully Joe can find a way to save the trees so we won't be without in 10 years.
