Canada and Norway have stricter gun control but they still had the mall shooter and the Norway Nut.
This is going to happen sometimes and it sucks. Unlike in other countries, some mass shootings are avoided by gun-carrying citizens. These don't tend to make the news.
Bottom line is that the 2nd Admendment is law, at least until the Supreme Court decides it is not.
Guns are just a piece of techonology. They are inherently neither good or bad. They are what humans make of them. In the case where a citizen shoots an intruder bent on robbery, rape, and murder, the end result is good. In the cases of Holmes, Austin, VTech, Columbine, etc., the end result is bad. It is the human holding the gun that determine it's "goodness" or "badness". McVeigh killed 168 with fertilizer. Terrorists killed thousands with box cutters and airplanes. Even if guns were eliminated, psychos are going to find ways to kill. Does not take a lot of skill or knowledge to make bombs from everyday materials that cannot be regulated or banned. Those that seek to kill will find a way. Not sure if it is true or not, but the story is that every military aged Swiss male has a fully automatic weapon and ammunition in their closet in case of hositilities (can anyone verify one way or the other?). And yet you never hear of such rampages over there. So it is not the fact that high powered weapons are available, it is the thought process of the person holding them.
"Assault weapon", by the way, is a media myth. It was created to instill fear of a specific type of semi-automatic rifle that happens to look like a military rifle.
Might have changed, but a FFL (Federal Firearm License) can be had for $200. The owner is allowed to own full automatic weapons but has to register them with the Feds. It also allows them to buy/sell firearms. It does require a background check.
This discussion happens every time one of these terrible tragic events take place. Perhaps it is good that we discuss events, but we never hear about the thousands of times a year that gun owners stop crime and protect themselves and others. We will never even begin to know the number of times a year that crimes never happen because a gun might be present. If this criminal had driven his car down the length of the the line of people outside there would not be a single call to ban cars. This man was a scientist who created bombs. He could have killed in many ways!
In short,as always,it is not the weapon, but the person who uses it!

A typical knee-jerk reaction to this would be to focus on the guns, and that is exactly what we will get from our politicians. The "common sense" ideas that will now come to light will be to punish and restrict the rights of law-abiding citizens for the actions of one crazy person, and nobody will be safer in the end.
This nut had gas and explosives, too. He could have blown the whole theater up, based on what I'm hearing about his apartment and the traps he set in there. Didn't he start the whole process with explosives and a shotgun (commonly used for duck hunting)? Should we focus on that as well? There are hundreds of thousands of firearms owned by individuals in this country that have not, and will never be, used to injure another person.
Maybe, just maybe, the issue is that the guy was just completely crazy, and that red flags were ignored everywhere -- all the while granny is getting felt up by the TSA trying to get on a plane to go see her grandkids. And that is happening because of another knee-jerk reaction.
Defense team: "Drew Peterson's wife was killed by a bathtub."
What really scares me is how a civilian can gain such easy access to that many rounds of ammo in a short time as well as these large capacity magazines on semi-automatics that police don't even have. I realize the guns and the large magazines didn't pull the trigger that night on all those innocent victims, but there needs to be something put in place to flag these type purchases in such a short period of time.

Maybe...but we don't hear about the people who buy that same volume and DON'T use it to kill folks. Look at how thoroughly planned this was. Do you think a waiting period on a gun or ammo would've prevented this? I don't. And we can't really know if it would've dissuaded him at all to have a waiting period. So, do we infringe on the rights of the mass of law abiding citizens in order to put in place an intrusive and expensive tracking system that may not do anything to deter the criminals?
