They earned it. They probably should have been in the Big 12 to start with if not for politics after the SWC broke up. But they did not mope. They got busy and made themselves attractive.

They hadn't really been any good for decades before the Big 12 started.
Baylor had had a couple of decent years. Iowa State? Kansas and KState football were both HORRIBLE at the time. Texas Tech has ALWAYS been an underachiever.
Houston is the team that got a bad deal.
In the four years before the Big 12 started, Houston was 4-7, 4-7, 1-9-1, and 1-10.
They were great for 3 years in 1988, 1989, and 1990.
The three years before that they were 4-7, 1-10, and 4-6-1.
