2 primary reasons our play count has not been higher:
1. Our scoring drives are not consuming much time - 3 minutes on avg
2. And the primary reason. OUR DEFENSE (on avg) CAN'T GET OFF THE FIELD. Especially in second half
Fortunately this has not hurt us in the first two games b/c we have played two weak defenses. We better find some defense next week against Illinois b/c scoring points will not come as easily. We'll need as many plays possible
Tech is 120th (last) in the FBS in total defense allowing 585 yards per game. But the number of plays Tech has faced is the main reason the numbers look that bad.
Tech is allowing 5.74 yards per play on 102 plays per game. That yards per play average ranks 82nd, and I think that is a more representative indicator for how the defense has played.
What this defense must improve on is 3rd and 4th down efficiency defense...Tech has only gotten off the field 14 times in 39 tries when opponents get to 3rd down.
113th on 3rd downs allowing 20 of 39 (51.28%)
99th on 4th downs allowing 5 of 7 (71.4%)
Compare those 3rd and 4th down figures to last year....Tech got off the field 132 times out of 211 in 13 games.
10th on 3rd downs allowing 68 of 211 (32.23%0
T48th on 4th downs allowing 11 of 22 (50%)

Some of you need to get off the x box and put on a jock strap. Waaay too much stat talk .
Had thr ball 11 times (not counting end of half kneel downs) and scored 8 TDs. Four TD drives were one and half minutes or less. Pretty impressive, even though we fumbled a sure TD away on one drive.
I used to look at numbers and think that they really meant something. Seems as though the only stat that matters for us will be turnovers. As long as we don't cough it up, we will win a bunch of games. I trust the score more than the stats right now. Hope I never have to go back and look at stat sheets again.
The D seems to do better early on in the game. Our O seems to go up by about 3 TDs before the opponent gets it together. The early advantage seems to be the key factor in winning the games so far with the D loosing ground later in the game and the O scoring enough to keep the lead later in the game. If we come out in this game and don't get ahead early, it may be a long night.

Turnovers and penalties. Way too many penalties killed our drives on a couple occasions. We could have gotten at least one more TD I figure and our defense kept handing yards to them that helped them get first downs on several occasions so I figure at least one less TD could have been prevented. Both are big issues and I'm glad we are +3 on turnovers right now total if I recall correctly.
Seeker, I agree on most of the penalties. The 15 yard variety calls have got to stop. Had we received any holding calls to help our D in the 1st 2 games we would have won both by wider margins. Those 10 yard penalties will stall an offense in a heartbeat. Apparently, fair treatment is only guaranteed to those seeking housing, employment, or financing. Sports are way outside that realm.(joking y'all, don't want disparate treatment brought into this)
And even if you don't have the personel/athletes to fix the defense you can definitely fix the penalties which would at least help the situation. The coaches on both sides of the ball need to make this happen.
