That wasn't why they left, though. The path from the MWC to the BCS was actually more clear then than it is now. The bigger issue was TV options (the MWC's TV deal controls everything) and - on a more subterranean level - having been left behind by Utah. MWC might be able to get a better tv deal if they can bring back Boise, San Diego St, BYU and add Houston, SMU, & UTEP/Tulsa
Maybe. I've lost track of what their TV deal was. It used to be that Comcast and CBS were absolutely opposed to re-opening negotiations even when that meant losing BYU. One of the reasons they didn't go to 12 was that it meant that their money would have simply been split more ways (instead of getting the ability to renegotiate like the ACC). However, since then the MTN disappeared and so I have to think that meant *some* change. In any event, the issue with the TV contract wasn't just money. It had more to do with the fact that BYU was prohibited utilizing BYUtv even for non-televised events. If they re-evaluate one I suppose they can re-evaluate the other.

As you know, there will be no more BCS. The new spot for BYU will be the piss ant bowl which is saved for those with no chance of winning a NC.
It doesn't make sense to me that BYU wouild turn down the Big 12 and then re-join the MWC???? If they pressed the matter, I am sure they could still get an invite from the Big 12, along with perhaps Lousiville in the east. That would give them 12 and a championship game, as well as split into nice divisions.
There was a lot going on under the hood with BYU, that I'm not sure any of us really know for sure, in concessions that MWC/WAC had historically made that Big x= 12x - 4x + 2x evidently refused to promise... like absolutely no scheduling of Sunday games in any sport under any circumstances. And I recall there being some issues with the rights for broadcast on their BYU channel as well.
Not to mention the fact the Big 12 coaches hated to play at altitude in the Mountain time zone when CU was in the league. Not to say that BYU to the Big 12 won't happen some day, but you are correct when you say "a lot going on under the hood with BYU."
