Sun Belt commish ‘optimistic’ per future of conference

Sun Belt commissioner remains ‘optimistic’ about future of conference

Posted by Ben Kercheval on November 29, 2012, 1:57 PM EST
Which is hard to do if you’re Karl Benson, the former WAC commissioner who saw the Mountain West pick apart his conference over the course of the past couple of years of realignment. With the news yesterday that FAU and Middle Tennessee would be leaving the Sun Belt for Conference USA — that was made official today in a release — well, it’s been tough sledding for Benson as of late.
Yet Benson claims to be ‘very optimistic’ about the future of the Sun Belt in a statement released Thursday regarding the departures of FAU and MTSU:

Yes, I guess when fans like me holler for an official statement during tough times, you can end getting something like that.

I thought the part where it said "tough sledding for Benson as of late" was funny. Is this guy not familiar with Benson's resume?

Someone please compile a list of all of the schools that have left a conference helmed by Benson. I'm telling y'all he's going for some kind of record. Remember when he first became comish of the Sun Belt and he was talking about poaching teams from CUSA.

You can start with the entire Mountain West Conference.

Then there are several teams in CUSA (La Tech, UTEP, Tulsa; now FAU, FIU, UNT, Mid. TN)
    The Big 12 (TCU)
The Big East (SMU, Boise, San Diego State)
    Independent (BYU)
    Pac-12 (Utah)

That's all I can think of right now, but all of those schools, at one time or another, left the WAC or SBC while Mr. Peanut was the commish.

Benson is a walking circle jerk...and Monte's best friend!

I'm an asshole! What's your excuse?

That's enough for two conferences right there.

Surely Benson holds some kind of Guiness World's Record.

    I forgot Rice.

I've never been a big Benson fan, but in his defense, it is fair to say that his expansion of the WAC to 16 teams ended up being a solid prediction. The "airport" schools tried to separate themselves by forming the MWC, but Nevada, Fresno, etc. eventually ended up with them. If the WAC had stayed in that configuration, it might be getting the Big East's spot at the table in the new BCS.

But, when it comes to competing with it her conferences and installing confidence in his member institutions, he he's never gotten the job done.

He was optimistic about the WAC right up until he turned off the light in his office at WAC HQ's for the last time....

Quickest way to stop conference realignment is for Benson to retire.

His reasoning in expanding to 16 back in the day was not a vision of the future. It was a screw up. Thirty years later and we are just now getting to 16 team conferences.

Sunbelt can be optimistic because there are always Lamar's, Sam Houston's, and Georgia southern s that want to move up
