The BE conference is getting insane. So much for close rivals.
They are going after TV markets they don't currently have. They've got to have something to sell in the new TV package.
We DO NOT want Boise and SDSU to leave the BE for the MWC.
Tulane and Georgial Tech left the SEC about the same time because they felt that they couldn't compete with SEC schools because of academics. At the time Tulane didn't even offer a degree in physical education and I don't believe sport's broadcasting (or whatever it's called) had been invented yet.
Because Big East football will not collapse, and they are not inviting us.
If for some reason it does collapse, it will just be reincarnated into something similar, which also would not include us.
And none of the schools that have declared for the Big East will come back to C-USA.
The idea is that even without Boise and SDSU, the current "Big" East would always be able to pull whomever they like from CUSA.
That would be bad for us if they took Tulsa and USM (because of actual on-field strength), and potentially bad for us (although I could live with it) if they took, say, FIU and ODU.
Eventually, the old football BE is all scattered, the new BE is the old CUSA, the new CUSA is the old SB (but with us), and the new SB is all FCS start-ups plus ULX.
That wouldn't be a whole lot worse than our WAC existence, but not exactly what we were shooting for.
Football doesn't even matter anymore. They just invited UNLV as a football-only member. Since 1987, UNLV has only had 3 winning seasons. UNLV has only managed to eek out 2 wins in 7 out of the last 9 seasons. Boise State was the last remaining nationally relevant non-AQ football program with value, and the Big East has already gobbled them up.
At this point for the Big East, it's all about markets, markets, and more markets. Big markets and untapped markets. Markets.
Rivalries are irrelevant because rivalries lead to overlapping markets.
Those football-only members will likely eventually become all-sports members after the Catholic schools move on. The Big East will eventually become a 14- or 16-team nationwide all-sports conference. Probably 16. Eventually 20 wouldn't surprise me either. More teams = more markets = more tv money = more power = less competition.
Navy may reconsider their plans and decide to remain independent in football with other sports in the Patriot League. I think it will eventually be mutual decision for Navy and the Big East to divorce unless Air Force decides to join. Other than Navy, nobody else will have second thoughts about going back to where they came from. The only school that could possibly derail Big East football is Boise State if they decide to go back to the MW, but they aren't going back. They've worked too hard to separate themselves. However, if they do, the Big East would just decimate C-USA without inviting us, and C-USA would look like today's Belch plus us.
BYU has already rejected the Big East about a hundred times. As long as they can put together a decent football schedule and secure a bowl-tie in each year, they will not join the Big East.
The only nationally relevant program for the taking is New Mexico's MBB program, and even that may be a stretch.
Neither LaTech nor Southern Miss will get a sniff from the Big East assuming Boise State follows through with their commitment to the Big East.
Teams that I think are ahead of Tech and USM on the Big East's list:
BYU
Fresno State
UNLV
Air Force
New Mexico
Hawaii
UMass
Tulsa
UTEP
UTSA
UAB
Georgia State
Old Dominion
Charlotte
Nevada
Colorado State if no AFA
Utah State if no BYU
San Jose State
Pick some random MAC schools
Then Southern Miss is certainly ahead of us.
They'd even give Rice, which is in a duplicate market, a bid out of goodwill before they'd invite us.
You are right. This is nothing new.
Decimate in terms of quality. The Big East won't be able to kill C-USA because C-USA will always be able to raid the Belch, well, before the Belch dies at Benson's feet. If Boise State balks, the Big East would be at about 10 all sports members before raiding C-USA for up to 6 more schools. And that's still assuming no more movement by the power conferences. I still think Florida State and Clemson will eventually join the Big 12, which would lead to more dominoes.
The purpose of my post was to bring some reality to the Big East discussion. We simply don't offer anything that they are looking for. I'm not losing any sleep over any team that may leave C-USA. I'm very content with and thankful for where we are because I realize it could have been a lot worse. I have never complained about our conference situation, WAC or C-USA, because it's always been better than the alternative, the Belch. My only concern about our conference situation is keeping ULL out. That is the most important thing for us going forward.
