Let's face it, the Indy Bowl hasn't exactly endeared itself to many NW Louisiana voters, especially with its' poor decisions over the last 2 or 3 years. They pissed off a lot of voters in 2012 --including many LA Tech alums-- when they pulled their little stunt and invited ULM instead of LA Tech. So how's that working for 'em now?
I agree with this. No one told anyone what it would be used for, who would control it, etc. We also are very aware of Shreveport and the inept ability to handle money. I would have been interested in it from the other 2 areas, if they could have convinced me it was not simply a wasted pot of money. Instead, the only thing being said was it was for the I-bowl which I care nothing about.
Poor effort by those wanting the tax -
They didn't even throw a punch or make swing to try and get it passed
''Don't be a bad dagh..."
So let Shreveport destroy itself ala Detroit, then others can move in and revive a new city. Hey, I'm pretty sure this whole affair is the plot for Arrow. Only the real-life equalivents don't know how to end the plot.
For full disclosure, I voted against the tax proposal. I hesitated as to which way I would vote in Election Day, but I ultimately decided to vote against the proposal.
I'm not anti-tax. I'm in favor of taxes if the money is used wisely by the government and a good case is made as to why the tax should exist. I voted for a tax renewal for the Bossier Parish libraries yesterday, because I use their libraries on a regular basis and I've seen first hand how the money is used to improve the lives of Bossier Parish residents.
I voted against the I-Bowl tax proposal, because the tax supporters did not make any case to the voters as to why the tax should be approved or how our area would improve due to the tax. If they sold the tax proposal to the voters and told us why the tax would benefit our area, I probably would have voted in favor of the tax. Talking about the benefits to the Independence Bowl and how the Sports Commission would use their share of the money to bring in sports events like the C-USA Basketball Tournament would have been a lot better than saying absolutely nothing or being wishy-washy like Senator Barrow Pea-____.
I believe the 2012 bowl fiasco was the last major news some Tech people heard about the Independence Bowl, since no tax supporters made the case publicly for the tax. So, when some of these voters heard about an "I-Bowl Tax" on the ballot, they didn't think of potential benefits to the area and Louisiana Tech athletics. They thought of Missy Sellers and the I-Bowl flipping Tech the middle finger and telling them to go screw themselves. With the absence of a good case for the tax and how it could benefit Shreveport and maybe LA Tech, the only thing they (and I) thought about was the 2012 bowl fiasco.
For me, I voted against the tax, because no good case was made to me to support the tax. If you don't effectively sell the tax proposal and can't give me good reasons to support a tax increase, my natural inclination is to oppose the tax. I suspect many people are the same way.
I live in Bossier and had seen it talked about a while ago here. The day before the election I found out it was on the ballot when a friend that is involved with the I-bowl posted about it on FB. Even her description didn't discuss anything other than the I-bowl, and for her that was enough. That is reason enough for many to just say NO. They needed to sell the other areas.
That's the reason why the proposal this time included money for the Sports Commission and the Airport group. I believe the hope was that enough people would support the other two items attached to the I-Bowl proposal to get the whole package passed. When the hotel/motel tax for just the I-Bowl was presented to the Legislature in 2013 the first time, it was swatted down in the Legislature with the assistance of local Representative Barbara Norton.
While publicity and leadership is definitely up for debate, I believe it was the Shreveport Bossier Sports Authority who was working with Tech and C-USA to bring the basketball tournament here. Those efforts were given a blow by the voting down of this hotel tax.
It was this group that put on the very successful NBA exhibition between Dallas and New Orleans. In fact, Britton Banowsky was on hand with Tommy Mc and some other Tech folks at that exhibition game. I absolutely believed given more resources, they would have been a great asset to the region's sports development.
Again, in hospitality communities I'm all for "Hamburger Taxes" and "Hotel Taxes." It's how the tourist part of New Orleans, Hot Springs and such communities survive.
The tourists pay the tax.
Missy's best friends in the hotel business shoulda been convinced to be on board.

does this mean if Missy goes away she will keep coming back in a Flash? No one on the show ever stays down for long ... One positive of Shreveport Bossier is strong military community and absolutely votes RED. Sad part is realization that kids have so much more opportunity and quality of life outside LA ....
The Duckers appear to be one and done. Tax could be back on the ballot.
