    San Diego State's conference future?

A great read in Sunday's San Diego Union-Tribune:

Re: San Diego State's conference future?

The conference promised Boise State a lot and that's going to come out of the TV money for everybody else. How much is going to be left over for everyone else? Enough to keep UNLV and Fresno from bolting, and probably (but not necessarily) enough to get SDSU back into the fold, but I don't think it'll be enough for anything beyond that. The constraints on second and third tier rights (only two networks allowed) are going to make it difficult to ratchet up the new TV money enough to pay Boise State their due *and* make it worthwhile to UH and SMU. But maybe it can be done. It seems to me that their primary sell to us is stability. Which, as tempting as that is, is a pretty tough bridge to gap when looking at the likely money differential between equal-member BE and non-Boise MWC.
University of Houston '01. Any references to "we" or "us" likely refer to UH. Cheers!

Agreed, Fresno and UNLV had to vote for the deal, but they have no place to go anyway.

Expect San Diego State to announce that they are staying in the MW prior to the Big East meetings this Friday.

I am losing track....... How many are currently left in the Big East (not counting SDSU and Boise)? There are the 7 Catholic schools that are talking about forming their own thing and there are two that the ACC might grab. How many are left after that?

Thanks! It is truly CUSA, then. We either need to get in or talk just a couple of them to come out. Navy should leave and be indy. Temple might have some options with bball..... The name Big East makes about as much sense as the name WAC once meant or Big 12 or Pac 10. They are screwing up all the directions and numbers with these conference shake ups.

I do not see why the Big East would be in such a hurry to add more schools since they will have 12 for football in 2013 and 2014
I do not think Navy is scheduled to be a member until 2015. In 2013 BSU and SDSU will have to honor playing since the season in this fall and the schedule has been formalized. The same goes for Rutgers and Louisville in 2014 Seems the Big East would
not be able to argue for keeping Rutgers and Louisville for this fall and next if the did not make BSU & SDSU honor this one
year before the return to the MWC

Boise State will not play a down of football in the Big East. They'll pay an exit fee to get out of their 2013 obligation just like TCU did.

If San Diego State decides to return to the MW, SDSU won't play a down of football in the Big East either. They'd also pay an exit fee.

The Big East needs to rush because they have to get a TV deal lined up. It'd be tough for the Big East to negotiate a TV contract when they don't know what their membership will be.

SDSU is almost guaranteed to return to the MWC. It would be stupid not to.

The MWC is set to take them back, but they are running the risk of making a lot of people mad with the games they are playing. The MWC schools still have to vote in this, so the smart thing for SDSU to do is return to the MWC and do it quickly. I will be shocked if they are still committed to the Big East on Monday morning. If they are, it could seriously hurt their political chances of being voted back into the Mountain West.

Minor correction: No exit fee for SDSU.

But yeah, I think we will see action sooner rather than later.

If you are correct, then it seems to me this would be the time for Tech to try very hard to do the same thing with the
Big East The Big East will need a couple teams to take BSU and SDSU places so they can have a Championship game
this fall. It is also the last yr of the current BCS buster setup Tech could minimize the Exit Fee from CUSA and really
help the Big East with our Football and men's basketball programs--much like Temple did this past yr.

I think we're somewhat oblivious to any possibility of moving to the BE. Being proactive in athletics hasn't been a strong suit of the Ruston Dawgs.
