Conf Sunbelt Benson's Belch survival plan

    Courtesy of The Advertiser: http://www.theadvertiser.com/article...ions-expansion

Benson scrapped his plans for mid-January additions and is deciding to wait for now to see how other dominoes fall.

The Belch plans to add at least 2 more schools to replace Middle Tennessee and Florida Atlantic.

The candidates for the Belch are:
    - Georgia Southern
    - Appalachian State
    - Liberty
    - Jacksonville State
    - Lamar
    - Sam Houston State
    - Idaho (football only)
    - New Mexico State (football only)

Benson's goal for the Belch is to have 10 football schools plus the 2 non-football schools for a 12-team, 2-division league.

Benson may opt to add Idaho and NM State for football only so they can stage a Belch championship game.

Benson says that they will probably add 2 football schools in the east to keep the divisional balance between the east and west.

That means that Appalachian State and Georgia Southern will likely be the next two FCS call-ups to the Belch.

    Belch East
    Appalachian State
    Georgia State
    Georgia Southern
    Western Kentucky
    Troy State
    South Alabama
    Belch West
    Arkansas State
    UA-Little Rock
    UL-Monroe
    UL-Lafayette
    UT-Arlington
    TSU-San Marcos

Until the Belch gets raided again by C-USA...

Let him go ahead and get Idaho and NMSU on the hook. When he does, we get NMSU and Western. They are stuck with Idaho.

You list the negatives of NMSU and I'll offset each one with a positive.

I've said all along, if we get NMSU is will be a defensive move like I've described above. Better them than Arkie St or LaLaff

If CUSA were to lose UTEP then replace them with Texas St

Wait a minute.....I thought W Kentucky received a CUSA invite on the same day that MTSU did? If not, who did? (Good lord, this crap is hard to keep up with!)

    This.

People need not compare candidates with who we already have. Compare them against each other. Besides at the end of the day NMSU can actually earn money for the conference through tourney units. Not a lot of the other candidates have this potential.

And NM State offers AggieVision. All of their football and basketball games are televised statewide, and CSN Houston broadcasts their games, a station that we get on Louisiana cable. If not for AggieVision, we would not have seen Ryan Allen's 85-yard punt this year. We play at NM State in MBB the last week of the regular season in a game that may decide the conference title, and thanks to AggieVision, we'll be able to watch it.

NM State also has a larger athletic budget than all of the Belchers.

NM State is a better academic institution than all of the Belchers.

NM State has a stronger MBB program and attendance than all of the Belchers. WKU is the only other hoops program in the Belch capable of earning NCAA MBB units for the conference.

And they don't have the stigma of being a Belcher or FCS call-up.

NM State is definitely my choice for the first replacement to C-USA.

I agree with 99% of this although to me their football program still has some Belch stigma.

That said I agree for many reasons that they are an easy choice to move up before remotely considering any Belch teams.

NMSU would also occupy a spot that would no longer be available to UL-L. If we can manage to keep the UL-X'ers stuck together in the SBC, we'll maintain a definite recruiting advantage over.
