They don't. Watson has been reinstated to the team. He still faces a felony charge and hasn't appeared before the grand jury yet.

The grand jury indicted Tyrone Watson for the felony battery of a fellow student. Watson's arraignment isn't scheduled until March 18, after the WAC Tournament is over.

Since Watson just completed his 30-day suspension from basketball, NM State has now reinstated him back onto the team, and NM State is allowing him to play the rest of the season. One problem for NM State and Watson: His release order states that Watson cannot leave the county without permission from the court. Watson's attorney is working with the DA to allow him to travel to their game in Denver today and to Vegas for the WAC Tournament. Regardless, it looks like he will suit up when Tech plays in Las Cruces next Thursday.

IMO, this is being handled very poorly by NM State. A student-athlete facing felony charges should not be allowed on the basketball court until he has been cleared in a criminal court.

Not necessarily. Just because somebody is charged doesn't mean it is true. Duke learned that lesson.

Charged is one thing. Indicted is a completely different situation. Watson's indictment should have triggered an indefinite suspension.

And the Duke lacrosse situation is not comparable due to the combination of criminal perjury and prosecutorial misconduct involved.

I know that, but Watson already admitted to punching the student. Regardless of whether he's found guilty or not, I still don't think a student-athlete who's been indicted for a felony should be allowed on the basketball court until after the entire legal process plays out. This is very bad PR for NM State, a school whose basketball players have had several run-ins with the law in recent years.

Clearly 30 days off haven't done a thing for his self-control.

And totally irresponsible coaching...Menzies left Watson in the game immediately after the technical.
