    Coaching Records

A little perspective on what Coach White has accomplished in less than two years.

Here are the all time coaching records by percentage for TECH head basketball coaches.

Coach Years Seasons Record Winning %

    1. Andy Russo 1979-85 6 122-55 .689
    2. T.J. Eagles 1985-89 4 87-40 .685
    3. L.P. McLane 1934-36 2 26-12 .684
    4. MICHAEL WHITE 2011-13 1+ 37-19 .661
    5. Scotty Robertson 1964-74 10 161-86 .652
    6. Keith Richard 1998-07 9 150-117 .562
    7. Hal Lee 1931-34 3 24-19 .558
    8. Cecil Crowley 1945-64 21 269-221 .549
    9. Robert S. Wynn 1926-31 5 61-55 .526
    10. Emmett Hendricks 1974-77 3 40-37 .519
    11. Jerry Loyd 1989-94 5 73-72 .503
    12. R.C. Kenny 1925-26 1 7-7 .500
    13. Jim Wooldridge 1994-98 4 52-59 .468
    14. J.D. Barnett 1977-79 2 23-29 .442
    15. Kerry Rupp 2007-11 4 57-73 .438
    16. Herb Duggins 1936-40 4 27-46 .370
    17. Joe Aillet 1944-45 1 5-12 .294

White is on track to be at the top of the list of some pretty good coaches. With a win tonight he will be winning 2 of every 3 games coached.

Lots of interesting information in this list. The worst basketball coach in the history of the school has the football stadium named after him:icon_wink:... of course he only coached one year at the end of WWII.

Richard's overall tenure was not that bad, he just went downhill. He started off with 4 straight winning seasons and then only had one in the last four years here.

Jerry Loyd's record is very deceptive. He survived three years on Tommy Joe's recruits, going 80-48 (.625); he then went 9-46 (.167) with his own guys which is the worst two year record in the history of TECH.

Loyd's tenure also makes Wooldridge's record deceptive. He started with absolutely nothing thanks to Loyd and still was relatively close to .500.

Rupp's record is the worst of the modern era and I am still surprised that they pulled the plug early. Without the one good year, Rupp would have been approaching Herb Duggins territory and would have only had a football coach protecting him from being the worst ever.

    Re: Coaching Records

He's headed up into rarified air now, Russo-Eagles. First time I saw Tech play with White as HC I said I like that guy. (just like I said Sim can't coach after watching one game in his very first year). You, or at least I can, tell a good coach fairly quickly. The way his (her) players handle themselves is an indicator.

"No coach ever won a game by what he knows, but rather by what his players have learned." - Grantlin Rice

Now, a caveat. Who has Tech beaten under White? What are his "signature" wins to date? Gotta remember Russo-Eagles coached in the old SLC and ASC....my memory is failing me a little here....when Lamar, USL, and McNeese were often all ranked in the Top 40. And they both had HUGE OOC wins too. Such as Russo beating #5 Louisville. Eagles took a rebuilding team to the Final Four of the NIT, back when that was still a VERY good tourney.

But, White will have his chance to hang a trophy on the wall in the Dance!

    Re: Coaching Records

I think the win over Nevada in last year's WAC Tournament would have to be considered a signature win for White. Nevada was a #1 seed, and the Wolfpack came into that game with a 13-1 WAC record, 28-7 (.800) overall. LA Tech was #5 seed. While beating # 4 seed Utah St in the quarterfinals was truly wonderful, nobody expected LA Tech to knock off the Wolfpack and make it to the WAC Tourney finals.

    Re: Coaching Records

This year, the Southern Miss win is probably his biggest. But if he can win at Denver and/or NMSU, that would be big.

White's team plays good on the road and (like Dawg80 alluded), that's attributable to the character of his players...

    Re: Coaching Records

I can't pull it up right now, but I am pretty sure the Russo/Eagles tandem didn't get the big signature wins until year 4 or 5 of their reign. I do think Eagles made it to the NIT Final Four in his first year as a head coach. Of course, Tommy Joe had recruited the entire team that he inherited.

The win over Nevada has been definitely been the signature win for Coach White to date. It was better than the home win over Southern Mississippi which would be second.

As far as the win being one that nobody expected, several people were surprised last year in Vegas when I said I was confident that we would be playing against NMSU in the finals. This was before our wins over Utah State and Nevada. Witnesses are available.

I was extremely confident we would make the championship game because we had won 5 in a row before losing to Nevada in Reno in the last regular season game. We led at the half in that game and kept the lead until about midway of the second half. We had taken them down to the wire earlier in the season in Ruston before losing by 2. I didn't expect Nevada would be able to beat us 3 in a row. I got lucky that my confidence was validated.

Coach White also defeated Utah State in The Spectrum. That's something neither Richard nor Rupp could do.

How about making that trip to Vegas real soon, like in mid-March? I've already booked my room at the Orleans Resort Casino for March 13th - 18th. Are you paying for my trip if I tell you the outcome of the tournament in advance?

Coach White made the top 20 coaches this year. Also a few other mentions of our Dawgs.

The odd thing aout Wooldridge, though, is that his first year was probably his best coaching performance. They went .500 with one of the worst teams I've ever seen anywhere. I still remember USL's coach going ballistic because he said "there's no way we should be losing to a team that bad" The team was so bad the leading scorer quit the next year because he knew he'd never get on the court with the talent coming in. Too bad he was so bad at getting along with players--he apparently knew his basketball.

Speaking of Wooldridge, his UC Riverside team is struggling big time right now at 5-20. This will be their 4th consecutive losing season and likely Wooldridge's last year at UC Riverside.
