In reality, this thread should be called "new conference name change". This is not the Big East - it is a group of schools that joined the Big East before the Big East left and are taking their name with them.
I agree that it will be shortened to AAC and be confusing.

I think it's a poor conference name and branding choice because too many other things are associated with the "American" name and brand.
They should have revived the Metro Conference because they would have been able to inherit their history and unique brand, something that "The American" doesn't offer.

I agree...kind of "meh" in terms of name-creativity, but if "The American" is the name, I believe they need at least one team that wears RED, WHITE AND BLUE in the league...don't you?
More importantly, AAC is ahead of ACC alphabetically. Branding details.

Thinking of what might have been and a "lost 20 year period in athletics" how about this comment?
"In 2014-15, the American Athletic Conference will consist of full members Cincinnati, Connecticut, Houston, Memphis, SMU, UCF, East Carolina, South Florida, Temple, Tulane and Tulsa. At some point, nine of the 11 schools were former members of C-USA."

I think so, but we had no guidance. Our first move was negative when we fired an experienced AD and hired an lsu homer. Our first positive move was digging ourselves out of the hole Stovall put us in.
True........ We have been playing catch-up since then and are lucky that we are so far ahead of all public universities in Louisiana, except lsu. Time to keep moving, though. We can't settle with CUSA. I am hoping 2 openings come up and Southern Miss and Tech move to The American. Still don't like the choice of name, though.

I refuse to call it The American. That's lame on so many levels. If they thought AAC was a problem either because of the ACC or Appalachia, then they should have picked a different acronym (The American Conference, TAC, The American Athletic Association, T3A). I will probably go with AmCon, or maybe AmeriCon.

So you would think there was nothing wrong with the double directional name of East Central Louisiana State?
