Good old Memorial Gym
Yep.
MTSU's resume would have been much weaker than our resume even though they have a stronger RPI.
- MTSU is 0-2 against the Top 50. We were 1-0 against the Top 50.
- MTSU is only 1-3 against the Top 100. We would have likely been either 5-3 or 8-3 against the Top 100 depending on where Utah State finishes.
- MTSU has 2 bad losses, and we only have 1 bad loss.
That's why we would have been a lock and why MTSU is on the bubble.
The #1 seed is a huge advantage. NMSU or Denver will have to beat 2 of the top 3 teams to win the tournament and we will only have to beat one of them.
Coach White's #1 goal all season has been to win the conference tournament. That's all I'm gonna say about that.
Being from the southern part of the state, I'm a huge Saints fan. So I know that ending the regular season with some losses isn't necessarily a bad thing. The 2009 Saints won their first 13 games, before dropping their last 3 heading into the post season. That was the year they ended up winning the whole thing. I think losing the last few games actually helped out and definitely gave some egos a check.
I hope that's what happens here. Now we go into Vegas with something to prove. I think that'll give us the extra motivation we need.
We all know that we CAN do this! I am really ready for Thursday to get here!
We'll never know what the committee would do if we had won those two games last week and then fell short in the WAC tourney, but I tend to err on the side that doesn't favor one-bid leagues. We've seen very good mid-majors get left out of the big dance in the past, and we'll probably see it again this year with Middle Tennessee, Murray State and I'm sure others that are unknown at the moment being left at home. We'll never know if you're right, but I've always felt we had to win the WAC tourney to guarantee a bid. I didn't want to be among the last four at-larges on that bubble.
the bold, the beautiful, theprofessor
There will ALWAYS be some doubt when you're a program like Tech. The goofy committee does stupid things at times.
In this case, I thought had we run the table into the WAC tourney title game, and then lost, we'd have gotten an at-large bid. But that was the only scenario open to us, IMO. Moot point now.
I thought our strategy for the NMSt game was pretty dumb - we didn't do any adjustment after a full 10 minutes of running into the 7"6 wall without any success.
And, you may have been right. But I recall that only a few years ago some team got left out and they were saying, they were the first team ever with ___________, whatever it was, to be left out. So, the first team with 28 wins to be left out? If anyone could accomplish that, Tech could! Maybe BVDs would negotiate for a higher seeding and we'd get shafted again.
