I just don't see ESPN paying the ACC more money to add Cincy or Uconn.

    neither do i.
Ding ding ding! We have a winner!

The only thing that UConn would have addressed would be an attempt to plant some small flag in the NYC market.... but since they've already got Syracuse for that, they're superfluous.

Does not compute. Storrs = 150mi from NYC. Cuse = 250mi

The Big East has sort of historically claimed NYC with the "triangle" of UConn - Rutgers - Syracuse around the city. Those seem to be the three with any tangible market penetration. NYU doesn't have a football team.

I'm just saying that the ACC, having one of those three (Syracuse) to get a foot in the door, is probably sufficient at this time for their television deal, and UConn alone without Rutgers wouldn't bring much of an incremental gain. That is all. What say you, Dawg06?

Sorry, I read this on my phone a while back and forgot to come back to respond to you.

    - Rutgers' invitation to the Big Ten supports the theory that ESPN and Fox view Rutgers as the most important college in the NYC market.

    - Syracuse markets themselves as "New York's College Team," and right now that appears to be enough for ESPN and the ACC.

    - I think we can conclude that ESPN and the ACC concluded that UConn doesn't have much value compared to the others. Several months ago, I was surprised that they selected Louisville over UConn. Why? Academics, geography, and market. Despite all those advantages for UConn, Louisville was selected over them. Why? It appears to be facilities, football, and television ratings.

    - If UConn and Cincy could increase the ESPN television revenue distribution, they would have already been invited. They haven't.

The ACC Network is another story, and Swofford confirmed that it is in the works. Just because UConn and Cincy wouldn't boost the ESPN contract does not mean those schools wouldn't benefit the ACC Network. The ACC Network will be about getting the network in as many homes as possible. Thus, inviting UConn and Cincy would be necessary to maximize ACC Network revenues. That was the principle fueling the B1G and SEC expansion theories. The ACC will have to determine if the projected revenues from UConn and Cincy with the ACC Network will exceed the costs of splitting their conference distribution into more pieces. That is the next question that remains to be answered, and it may be a couple years before we know.

UConn, Cincy, Temple to ACC. Also, Navy to ACC for FBO to balance ND's non-fball deal. That new network needs programming, and a whopping 18 schools for all sports should do the trick.

The American, down to 8, wants to get back to 12. Every CUSA school but Tech jockeys for a spot. (Lil' ol' Tech -- having only just arrived in the CUSA promised-land -- doesnt care to rock the boat or make a bunch of trouble, you see.)

Tech gets left behind in CUSA with 9 former Belt & FCS upstarts. CUSA grabs 2 more from the Belt to get back to 12.

The Belt, now at 9 for all sports, is stable for another decade. Benson retires to his yacht.

Tech and northeast schedule a 10 year home and home football series.

BB&B posters across the country commit hari-kari.

    http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/blog/jeremy-fowler/22030790/conference-usa-weighing-16-team-model

I wanted to bump this thread after learning a little more about this story by Jeremy Fowler, which was the original subject of the thread last April 10. Banowsky gave an interview to Fowler about CUSA looking at the possibility of expanding to 16. After the ACC Grant of Rights deal was announced, Banowsky told Fowler on April 25 that the deal lessened the need for CUSA to get to 16. Fowler then tweeted that info.

After April 25, it became clear that Banowsky was looking to put together a line-up for the next TV deal with Fox if CUSA was raided. In the story Fowler indicated Arkansas State and UL Lafayette might be good additions. He didn't quote Banowsky on it, but there was an assumption on my part, and perhaps on the part of others, that Banowsky might have given him those schools off the record or perhaps not for attribution. Maybe even as a trial balloon.

After the story broke, several CUSA presidents were not happy. Old Dominion's president, in particular, was very public in wanting an eastern school if and when the league ever needed to expand. That has led to James Madison being visited twice by Banowsky since that time. It is now widely speculated that JMU would be the first school invited if CUSA needs a new member.

The reason I still have interest in the story is what I was told happened at the CUSA president's meeting in Dallas last June. ODU's president apparently pressed Banowsky about this particular story. He told the presidents he was responding to a question about expansion to 16 members but did not and would not give names of any particular schools, as CUSA puts models together using many, many schools. Essentially the reporter called him. He didn't call the reporter.

If it wasn't Banowsky who gave the names Arkansas State and UL Lafayette to Fowler, who was it? Was was their motivation? I am not sure about Arkansas State, but this is the only story I've ever seen from a major media outlet that has listed UL Lafayette as a possible target for CUSA expansion.
