Ahead of UsM? Wow!! 80 is not bad for a school that can't get the masses to join LTAC!!
This is great! The Bulldogs are on the rise! We turned a major corner and will never look back.
I agree! Need to break 30k in attendance soon!
I actually think we have a pretty dedicated fan base. The numbers aren't big, but the ones who are fans, are die hards.
The reality is the casual Louisiana sports fan considers himself an LSU fan. We get no support from people who have zero connection to Tech. Couple this with the fact that we are situated in a fairly low populated area. Compared to larger areas, there aren't that many casual fans- it's a population thing. The casual fans who are here have some dumb allegiance to LSU.
To consistently draw around what other schools draw in much larger areas, I'd say we've got a very dedicated fan base.
It was brought up in Sunday school the other day by a LSU alum about how diehard Tech fans could be. Somebody was talking about speaking in tongues and she made me too. Of her first time seek g somebody speaking in tongues. It was at a Tech football game when some of the older fans started barking!! Everybody laughed!! That being said, when I run into Tech fans they pretty much bleed tech blue!
I agree that we have some really die hard fans. The problem is stated very clearly above - the casual fans tend to look at lsu as their "flagship". To change that takes a combination of winning and marketing. We have to win big, though. We have to beat known bcs teams on a consistent basis (similar to last year) and get ranked. It is a long road for a non-bcs, but can be done. We came inches away last year from it (bcs bowl) and we have to keep that up. I hate to say that it will take surpassing lsu in the rankings for several years for this to happen, because many think that would be impossible. They have such a stronghold right now as a top 10 team. They haven't always had that, though. If they falter and we rise, we have a great opportunity.
It won't take that to get 30,000 in the stands, though. Get a name opponent to the Joe and market the H out of it and we can do that.
We need to be the Virginia Tech to University of Virginia or the Georgia Tech to the University of Georgia. That is possible.
Getting a name opponent in the Joe will not necessarity guarantee 30,000. What did Mississippi State draw, and they were not that far away. The Aggies, maybe. LSU would but it would take an act of the legislature to make that happen and we know the legislature kow tows to LSU. Arkansa would probably fill the stadium. Ole Miss probably wouldn't. Throw out some "names" that might be willing to come.
Baylor, OSU, OU (might not be willing), and most of the rest of the Big 12. Not sure TCU would fill it, though. They would bring people, but their name still isn't associated with big names to the casual N. La. fan. A&M would definitely fill us up, especially after last year's shoot out. Both Louisiana and Texas would show up.
Also, the other part of the equation I mentioned was MARKETING. We have never done a good job of that. You want the casual N. Louisiana fan to show up to further the cause of getting a bigger fan base. You want that more than the other team coming in mass.
I like this statement (emphasis mine). Everyone's money is green and this helps the cause and leads to bigger and better things. Fans that don't have a clue what conference Tech is in or bought their T-shirt at Walmart are always better than empty seats. The game day experience and football facilities are great, and people need to be made aware of this.
