I'm really not sure what Walter is now (her development over the past three years since we played her in high school), but she plays PG. She was more of an open court, get to the rim play maker more so than a half court offensive director or distributor. She was tremendously athletic and played "like a boy" but at times had control issues (would be going too fast/ little out of control) and while she could hit the three we were not overly concerned with her perimeter shooting, but I'm sure she has refined her game and should be a legitimate threat. On the floor she was a solid contributer to the Lady Razorbacks as a freshman and I'm sure she has only gotten better... more skilled, composed, and knowledgeable. As I stated earlier she is a bigger, stronger, faster, meaner, more experienced LU LU Perry.
Govan (walk-on PG from EL DO) is more of a defensive juggernaut that would be a distributor. She graduated the year b/f I got her so I'm not sure how good she would be offensively and that would be the real determining factor on whether or not she would be able to contribute on the court this year. She is a great girl that will work hard and never cause any locker room issues. As far as Coach Drew Miller (the defensive guru) liking her, he will like all three EL DO girls b/c that is what we focus on and pride ourselves on here. We believe in heavy pressure man to man defensive guy and that is what I brought into this program four years ago and our girls bought in. As I've stated before, Govan may be the best on-ball defender I've ever seen personally. Very strong and quick with good anticipatory skills.
I think that this line up of athletes should give the Lady Techsters more offensive weapons. My take over the last few years is that they have really strugged on the offensive end (D hasn't been great but a lot of that is due to undersized overpowered issues). They have had to run a ton of sets in the half court in order to get looks b/c they haven't had good offensive players, chemistry, or a fluid open motion or flex based offense that allows players to make plays first b/f the sets kick in. C-USA will be a rough road to travel this year so while I believe they will have "relatively better success" that may or may not translate into a ton more wins. The comp is much stiffer! But I will say that the staff seems to be shaping up nicely and only time will tell. Every year there are tons of teams picked in the bottom of their respective conferences that end up in the top and visa versa. Finding that reliable and solid PG and overall post play will be the obvious difference makers.
