Tim Floyd, UTEP deny top recruit Isaac Hamilton's release from NLI

    Hum...

Tim Floyd, UTEP deny top recruit Isaac Hamilton's release from NLI

Scott Gleeson, USA TODAY Sports 12:02 p.m. EDT July 22, 2013

UTEP coach Tim Floyd and his staff received a pleasant surprise when highly-regarded recruit Isaac Hamilton chose to play for the Miners over the likes of UCLA, Washington and Baylor.
Luring in a McDonald's All-American is never easy, especially at a program that that's only reached the NCAA tournament three times in the last two decades.
The latest surprise to the program isn't so pleasant.

    Rest of the story.

Re: Tim Floyd, UTEP deny top recruit Isaac Hamilton's release from NLI

I actually agree with Floyd's stance here. I'm not a big fan of the NLI system, and I can't stand that coaches have the ability to block transfers. I'm a believer if Hamilton wants to play for another school besides UTEP, he should have that right, after sitting out one season. It's late July, and it's not like a normal student at this point in the process would be able to say, "Oh wait, I'm not going to Tech; instead, I'm going to NSU." There's a whole application process and a number of steps involved with getting accepted and enrolled into college. That doesn't start in late July.

Floyd is right, what's the point of singing a letter of intent if you're allowed to get out of it?

Seems like the students could ask the same thing about coach's contracts (from either side - the school or the coach).

Or they might wonder about being coerced into signing a NLI to begin with.

I do think Tim Floyd did the right thing and if the NCAA rules against a team it would be against a "have not" like UTEP.

Just once, I'd like to see a great student athlete whose parents don't need the financial help hold the university hostage instead of the other way around. They convince these kids and their parents that they MUST sign the LOI.

Me too. But it would have to be a heck of a talent. And probably a basketball player.

How great would be it be to start hearing about whole high schools where nobody signed the LOI?

I could see it happening in Football in Louisiana due to TOPS. D.J. Banks would have been a good case study had he not chosen the high dollar education from Tulane to begin with.

It happens rarely, but more often than you think, especially in basketball. Some of the big-time prospects these days are simply signing a grant-in-aid instead of an NLI.

It happened here with 2 players, one a Ruston native, that "signed" with Tech and then went to ULL. That was during Rupp's tenure.

Didn't his brother play for Tech?

I remember that, but Rupp is probably a good case for students holding out while they still have any leverage.

He's one coach that you'd offer to trade a LOI for a 4 year scholarship if ever there was one.

I don't remember. It was Josh Brown, who grew up across the street from the TAC basically. Tech sent him to Odessa, which was where Nikita stashed players. He also had one of his recruits from the Bahamas there. They both "signed" with Tech, then Nikita took a job with ULL (He had worked for that guy before) and took his two recruits with him. Rupp played dumb, but whether he knew it or not it all comes back on him.

Kadeem Coleby is the 6'9" guy from the Bahamas. He left ULL and is set to play his senior season at Wichita State. Expected to be the starting center at WSU this season.
