Not sure why some folks get bent out of shape by use of the term "mid-major." It refers to the total athletic budget, national reputation and exposure, and the perception about the school/program in general. Schools in the BIG conferences that rake in $tens of millions annually from their conference membership....just because...are the major majors, and conferences like the SWAC, Southland, etc...are the low majors, and others, like CUSA, fall somewhere in-between, thus the term "mid-major." Schools/basketball programs like Tech have an uphill battle to fight just to compete for a top 25 ranking and the likelihood of getting at-large berths into the Big Dance. A basketball team like a....Alabama, for instance, might go 19-10 and get an at-large bid based on the perception of their schedule and who they are. Programs like Tech could have played an equally tough schedule, or very close, and gone 22-7 and be passed over for an at-large bid.
