Who are the upper majors and the lower majors?
Ask the hosts of the local sports talk show... They can tell you who some mid-majors are in football... Except they aren't sure if schools like UMass play DI football...Originally Posted by maddawg

Yeah, he knows a little baseball, but needs to leave the football thing to the two shades of Nick. People who use that term can NEVER define the term. They just repeat what they hear out of ignorance.

He needs to leave basketball to the others, too. I don't know how many times I heard him harp on the "magic number of 25 wins" to clinch a ticket to the Big Dance.
Yeah, I'd forgotten about that. I'm not sure if 25 was ever a magic number, but I'm old enough to remember when 20 was significant. That was a LONG time ago.
Not sure why some folks get bent out of shape by use of the term "mid-major." It refers to the total athletic budget, national reputation and exposure, and the perception about the school/program in general. Schools in the BIG conferences that rake in $tens of millions annually from their conference membership....just because...are the major majors, and conferences like the SWAC, Southland, etc...are the low majors, and others, like CUSA, fall somewhere in-between, thus the term "mid-major." Schools/basketball programs like Tech have an uphill battle to fight just to compete for a top 25 ranking and the likelihood of getting at-large berths into the Big Dance. A basketball team like a....Alabama, for instance, might go 19-10 and get an at-large bid based on the perception of their schedule and who they are. Programs like Tech could have played an equally tough schedule, or very close, and gone 22-7 and be passed over for an at-large bid.
I actually don't mind it either. While it is a class term that separates us from the largest (money wise) schools, it also separates us from the smallest schools.
I actually think CUSA and other non BCS conferences should embrace it. Brand ourselves as truly collegiate and not pro sports minor leagues. I'd bet there is a niche for it.
The perceptions you two have for "mid-major" teams don't match up with the teams the talking heads refer to. They never identify a team as a "small major" or a "large major". Mid-major is a derogatory term used to identify non-AQ schools and was originated by talking head idiots. Show me a list of what you think mid-majors are and I'll prove the list wrong based on what who the talking heads lump in as "mid-majors. Example: Grambling is a mid-major.
Here's another mid-major conference according to Goodman and the talking heads. Can you identify it? We are on the same level as these guys?

Mid major means non-BCS-football. Pretty simple.
Not according to D80, TD123, and most of the talking heads. Blue Dawg also has a different perception. The problem with the description is that it is a put down that most fans don't even understand. It's like them saying...
"Mike White is one of the top 20 coaches of the piss ant schools, but we shouldn't even consider him as a top 20 overall coach."
AMEN Maddawg! I am so sick of this term put upon us. Everyone has a different definition and it is derogatory. UConn used to be FCS in football, but was never a mid-major bball. Memphis is not "bcs" (a term that shouldn't even be used anymore, but could beat the crap out of a bball team from one of those conferences. It is a put down and anyone who accepts it is accepting the media's new definition of trying to separate D1a BBall.
On the same level as these guys? No, not even close. But with White as coach and now our affiliation with CUSA perhaps Tech's MBB will be in a couple of years. And, Grambling is NOT a mid-major.
