Ryan Allen wins punting job in New England

    Patriots released P Zoltan Mesko.

Mesko was due to earn $1.323 million this season. The Patriots have chosen to go with undrafted rookie Ryan Allen, who will make $405,000. Mesko, who struggled at just 43.1 yards per punt last season, will be on the short list when teams need punting help.

10% of our senior class last year is now starting in the league year one! Here's to that, and also to hoping Myles and the other guy can work their way onto the field at some point.

Sorry to be a Debbie Downer in a positive thread, but Myles White was cut yesterday by Green Bay.

He is on the practice squad, so he is still around.

The Dallas Morning News listed him as being released. Guess they signed him to the practice squad after they released him.

Re: Ryan Allen wins punting job in New England

Saw this in SI: Neither punter won or lost the Patriots job, and when it’s that close, almost every team is going to go with the younger and cheaper player. Mesko was due to earn $1.3 million in the final year of his contract; Allen will make $405,000. Nothing wrong with that. (And a punter with Mesko’s talent wasn’t going to sit around long. He signed with the Steelers on Monday.)
Patriots special teams coordinator Scott O’Brien, who is well respected around the league, obviously feels Allen will level out with more experience. The Patriots are going to have to hold their breath that Allen will be able to learn how to hold for underachieving kick Stephen Gostkowski—he’s never done it before. This move reminds of when the Packers axed veteran Jon Ryan in the days before the season opener for Derrick Frost in 2008. The Patriots hope it works out better: Frost was a disaster, didn’t last the season and never punted in the league again.

Re: Ryan Allen wins punting job in New England

    PATRIOTS SPECIAL TEAMS
One of the reasons the Patriots have gotten off to a strong start is because of the consistency of their special teams. Punt returner Julian Edelman is still one of the most dangerous in the NFL, capable of taking one back if the opening is there. He has the highest punt return average of anyone in NFL history at 12.9 yards per return and he is one of just seven NFL players to average over 12.0 yards per punt return. And punter Ryan Allen is proving to be one of the most precise punters in the game. He dropped four consecutive punts inside of the Bengals 10 and five inside of the 20 on Sunday. Kicker Stephen Gostkowski is also reliable. He was responsible for the Patriots only points last week, converting both field goal opportunities. He also sent all of his kickoffs into the end zone. If there is a question mark right on special teams it's at kickoff return. Leon Washington could be out with an injury, which might mean Devin McCourty is left to handle the kickoff returns.

Great for Ryan. We knew he would do it. Meanwhile, LSU's bad boy Aussie is still looking for a job. Some people around our community here were incredulous that a Tech punter could win the Ray Guy award twice over Brad Wing. No way could Allen be better than Wing, they said. Well, they were wrong.
