Southern Miss loses to Texas State 22-15 in home opener

Southern Miss loses 22-15 at home against Texas State. Some quotes from the game summary: " Southern Miss lost in the debut of coach Todd Monken. The Golden Eagles have lost 13 straight games. Their last win was in the 2011 Hawaii Bowl and the losing streak is the longest in the Football Bowl Subdivision." " Texas State took advantage of six Southern Miss turnovers, including four lost fumbles."

Looks like at least a 16 game losing streak. Seems like yesterday they were a double digit win team.

Southern Miss had 18 winning seasons in a row. The were consistent. Not flashy, but solid, and 7 wins and a bowl game was almost guaranteed. They brag about this consistency. 14 of those 17 years was under Coach Jeff Bower. His record was 119-83-1. But USM wanted to take it to the next level so they fired him.

The new guy came in and finally took them to the season they wanted in his 3rd year... a 12-2 finish, CUSA championship, and Top 25 ranking in 2011. But he left them for a better job. The next year they go winless (0-12). They fire that guy and hire a new coach. His first game is a disappointing home loss and is staring 0-4 in the face.

Tech, on the other hand, has been very inconsistent in the past 20 years. Several good teams, several bad teams, and several mediocre teams. Several coaches... some fired, some left for better jobs.

I think USM is going to find that with the firing of Jeff Bower, they have entered the inconsistent world of La Tech, and 99% of all Non-AQ teams.

But to be completely fair, Texas State is no push-over. We saw first hand last season that they're a salty bunch down in San Marcos. I know USM hated to lose, but I believe TXST will contend for the SBC title within the next season or two. They play with a chip on their shoulder, and don't mind playin' up.

With the Dawgs too far away, i went to the USM game. Their defense was impressive. Absolutely NO running game, passing game was good considering the previously mentioned running game. BEST thing about the game - seeing the Louisiana Tech flag flying over the west side of the stadium!
