Young has played in 2 games since graduating high school in 2010 and looks like it.
My observations
1. He looks uncomfortable in the pocket.
2. He looks like he is trying not to make a mistake.
3. He is not going through or having trouble with his progression.
4. He doesn't trust either his arm or his receivers.
Reading what he did in high school and watching some video on him in high school he was a good player. There is a big jump from HS to D1 and sitting out 3 years takes its toll. I believe that he can be a good QB for us if he can get make the adjustments mentally.
We won tonight and I will take the win. We have a short week to prepare for Tulane, so Go Dogs.
I agree with the punting and kicking. Based on tonight, we'll be just fine in those two areas. Also, our kickoff return team is good when we don't have touchback after touchback. The kickoff coverage team could use a little help though after giving up a couple of big returns tonight.
There are other good things from the game. The turnover margin went from -3 to +2. We didn't fumble the ball. We weren't picked off. Tevin King stepped up big time after Dixon hurt his knee. Andrew Guillot had a good night with 2 TDs. There were actual highlights from our defense tonight with the sacks and the INT by Liggins.
On the other hand, there were still too many pre-snap penalties from false starts and offsides. Our defense was burned badly a few times, especially the 2nd TD from Lamar. Scotty Young threw some passes that puzzled me during the game.
If you compare this year's offense (what we've done so far and in the next 10 games) to last year's offense, you will be disappointed. We were spoiled by the nation's #1 offense last year. We likely won't light the world on fire or put up Maddenesque numbers on offense this year.
It was an ugly win and boring most of the time, but I'll take tonight's boring win over last year's exciting loss against Texas A&M. Remember that our offense is still inexperienced and young. Scotty Young was okay with glimpses of greatness and glimpses of mediocrity. I believe the team will improve and gel through the season as the new players get more experience working together and playing together as a team.
Uncomfortable in the pocket? He almost looks too comfortable in there and a little lazy. That's why he gets sacked. If he was uncomfortable he'd be bailing and scrambling a lot more. He definitely looks like he's conservative and not wanting to make the big mistake, which by the way, he has not done.
Punt receiving has not done well in either game on any punt. Zero blocking has DJ not knowing what to do.
Other special teams look great.
...in other news, fans were dropping like flies early in the game yesterday. In 40 years of watching Bulldog football, I've never been puked on. Papadawg and I were puked-on not once but twice (we escorted the Pafford EMT's and an elderly lady out during the late first quarter, and some drunk dude in the early second quarter). My sister, who's an RN, was summoned under the east stands for a family friend who passed out at the concession stand. She wound up spending the next hour and a half at Northern Louisiana Medical Center. Maddawg and DFM...I had nightmares of seeing my barechested 73-year old dad screaming at the defense "Dang it boys HIT SOME BODY!!!" I was like, dad...i'm going down stairs to buy you a shirt. I'm not going have those man-boobs hitting me in the face all night.
Young made a couple of great throws downfield that were dropped by Casey and Griffin. I think he has potential, but may not trust his receivers. Coaches may be telling him to dink and dunk more often. When LAMAR is playing press coverage all night, that says something about our receivers' ability to make a play IMO. Bottom line is we are spoiled.
I'm not buying this at all. The mere fact that Scottie Young is playing football for the first time in 3 years --and hasn't thrown an interception so far-- tells you he's not being aggressive enough. He's looking for his "safety valve" receiver first. Last night, he stared down his safety valve receiver several times, until the receiver finally turned around. Then he threw it to him. This is also what got Dixon hurt, because the pass was telegraphed to the other team.
Fact is, Scottie Young doesn't remotely remind me of the QB he was in HS. It's SHOWTIME, and he's not stepping up to the show.
We are no good at blocking and tackling. Why we can't block like Seets did on our last touchdown throughout the game is beyond me.
No tackling.
No coverage.
No middle field coverage.
Young is scared to death.
Boring offense (especially compared to last year).
King and Dixon had a good time. With guys like them (plus our other backs), why do we not default to a run instead of throwing three incompletes?
Maybe this game will be a wakeup call per Hunter Lee.
I am not impressed at all with Barnes. He had two good breakups that I can remember but more often than not he got burned like Dave Clark.
If you want to score on the Dawg, throw a slant over the middle.
