Dumb for a college team with decent punting a kicking. PA is a highschool. The coach explained it pretty well. On kickoffs the opposing team got the ball on the 33 on average. On an onside kick the opposing team got the ball at the 47 if they recovered. A 14 yard difference. PA recovered the onside kick 20% of the time. It was worth taking the risk over 14 yards. It was a similar situation with punting.
This wouldn't work in college if a team has decent punting and kicking. The yardage difference between an kick vs. onside or punt vs. going for it is greater, I assume.
This is an example of the type of coach we need though. We don't need coaches who bang their head against the wall, walk around with a cane exclaiming "Football is won with players (T1), seniors (T1), defense (every football fan over 50), a full back (diito) and defense. We don't need all these numbers and stuff. God invented football so we could play defense. Just look at Alabama. We need to hire somebody in Saban's coaching tree: special teams and defense.
