2014 FIFA World Cup draw (Friday 10:30 AM CT E$PN2)

    Qualifiers by confederation--
    UEFA 13, CONMEBOL 6, CAF 5, CONCACAF 4, AFC 4, OFC 0

The field is divided into four pots:
Pot 1 (seeded teams)--Brazil (Group A), Argentina, Belgium, Colombia, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Uruguay
Pot 2 (CAF and unseeded CONMEBOL teams)--Algeria, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, Chile, Ecuador
Pot 3 (AFC and CONCACAF teams)--Australia, Iran, Japan, South Korea, Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico, United States
Pot 4 (unseeded UEFA teams)--Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, England, France, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Russia

How will the draw be carried out? (from FIFA.com)
The teams in Pot 1 will be automatically assigned position 1 in the groups in which they are drawn. Brazil will go automatically into position 1 in Group A.

The first step of the draw will be to pick out a team from Pot 4 – the only one with nine teams – and put that side into Pot 2, in order to ensure each zone has eight balls. Then it will be back to Pot 1 and Brazil will be placed into Group A, with the rest of the seeds drawn in position 1 of the remaining groups, consecutively up to the letter H.

Pot 2, now with teams from three different confederations, increases the risk of breaking the rule of geographical separation. In order to avoid a group with three European teams, there will be a Pot X featuring the four seeded South American teams. One ball will be drawn from this pot and this will determine the group for the sole European team in Pot 2. Then, Pot 2 will be drawn. The European team will go into the group already established, with the remaining sides fitting sequentially into Groups A to H.

It is also worth noting that some groups may be skipped to respect the rule of geographical separation, in order to avoid Chile and Ecuador going into sectors featuring South American seeds.

Pots 3 and 4 will then be drawn.

The position of the teams in the groups will also be drawn (except the seeds, as already mentioned).

    Columbia?

I was just in Columbia, and have daily contacts with Columbians, there are just as many Brazil fans, in Columbia, as root for their own team! I'm not joking. Kind of like ulmers worshiping at the altar of lspoo. I was defending the Columbian side to frickin' Columbians! who sport Brazil futbol gear. Not that they don't want to see their country's team do well....they do. But they shrug them off as being not-very-good. I am dumbfounded by this. But...now...Columbia is seeded???? I'll see a couple of those fellows this week for sure. Just wait...

The US needs to advance to the Final Four, at least, this time. As I recall we haven't made it past the Sweet 16.

You forgot 2002...United States went 1-1-1 in the group stage and then beat Mexico 2-0 (does that score ring a bell? and the match wasn't even in Columbus) in the round of 16. Then came the somewhat controversial 1-0 loss to Germany in the quarterfinals when a penalty kick was not awarded for a clear handball in the area by Germany.

I agree that this should be considered an underachieving World Cup campaign if the US doesn't reach the knockout stage and a disappointment without at least a quarterfinal appearance.

I remember the Mexico game, 2-0. But I got my math wrong and was thinking that was the Round of 32. Of course, it couldn't be since only 32 teams are in the finals to begin with.....duh!

Yeah, a German defender batted a Donovan header, I think it was, off the line and got away with it. Or, something like that. But, that's nothing new. The US always get screwed by the refs in the WC. And, it'll happen again in '14.

It's the Final Four or Bust! this time 'round.

Re: 2014 FIFA World Cup draw (Friday 10:30 AM CT E$PN2)

Group B is the toughest, the Group of Death
Group G is the 2nd toughest.

Of course, we've had no luck with Ghana. One loss was due to a bad call, I mentioned previously. But...it's 4 years later.

All we need to do is get 7 pts. Beat Ghana and Portugal, draw with Germany, and who knows? maybe we'll be group winner on the tiebreaker! We win the group and get Russia, probably as H runner-up. We beat the Ruskies and draw the Swiss. We beat them and reach the FF, along with Brazil, Spain and Germany (as Group G runner-up advancing).

    The FF is

    USA vs. Brazil
    Spain vs. Germany

Anything we do at this point is just gravy on the roast. Cooking the roast = reaching the FF.
