    It's Gameday!

Leaving for New Orleans shortly. Raiders vs. Byrd 8:30 tonite in the Dome.

Last time we played Byrd was in the 2011 quarterfinals in Shreveport. They won 35-24 and were the better team that night. No excuses. But tonite is a different day. So, we'll see how it goes.

Will be there in time to watch the Curtis vs. University Lab game.

For the record (again), I don't like this silly split. It is what it is...for now.

But not experiencing the wins NELA has--feeling bad for the Byrd fans. Hope you get another shot.

    That said....

Very entertaining game. Not particularly well-played at times, and certainly not well-officiated. That crew should never be allowed anywhere near a game of this magnitude again.

Kudos to the Byrd students. Solid mass jammed into one section. Kept cheering. Of course, both sides had lots to cheer about with the ebb & flow of the game, the quick changes in momentum. Not as many Byrd fans as Barbe fans last year....maybe 2/3 as many. But they were loud. Rummel's attendance was off of last year's 10,000+ some too.

Very impressed with Byrd's team. They are good. Hate to say it, but they need a better QB. Don't know who the kid is, but he didn't help their chances last night.

Speaking of QB's... Les Miles' son, Manny, QBs University Lab. Has a nice arm, and has some potential, but...

Side note: John Curtis has minimal following. Of the 6 schools playing in the Dome yesterday, Curtis had the smallest fan turn-out.

Anyway....I enjoyed the game. But, honestly, I enjoy seeing the Raiders play, win or lose. Just enjoy it more when we win!

Was the final TD fumbled before he reached the endzone??? Byrd announcing crew (homers of course) said he lost control at the 2-yard line. The Times said it was close. Nola.com doesn't even mention the no-fumble call.

    Re: It's Gameday!

One of several missed calls that would have been reversed with video replay. Oh, IMO.

That play first.....just think of Higgins vs KU. At the 2 yard line? No, he was just starting to put the ball in his hand to extend it about the 2. It looked like, to me, when I saw it live and watching the repeated replays on the TVs they have around the Dome, it was a fumble, probably about 1/2-yard line or so. Hard to tell, really, because the ball popped out clearly just as it was about to cross, or was on, the goal line. Well, back to the replay possibility. If the views I saw were the only ones the replay official would have used he might not have been able to reverse the call on the field. The ref who signaled TD was smack on the goal line. None of the replays had that same look, they were all either from the end zone camera, behind the goal posts, or from up the sideline, about the 25-yd line or so.

Honestly, I think it was a fumble. I've watched enough football.....

There were other horrible calls. The others all favored Byrd, but Rummel got that one.

It does point to the bigger picture of this STUPID habit we see from players today. Ivan Phipps was the Rummel ball carrier on that play. If he gets tackled or gets shoved out-of-bounds, Rummel would have had a 1st and goal around the 1-yard-line, about 8 mins to play, trailing 22-16. Hello! There was no need....like Higgins....to have to score on that play. If it had been a 4th and goal play, then yeah, the ball carrier should try to extend the ball rather than come up short. But, that wasn't the case. Where's the coaching these days???

    Re: It's Gameday!

Forgot to mention the other plays:

Byrd got away with a lateral, ruled as a forward pass. Rummel had recovered. Byrd kicked a FG two plays later.

Rummel executed a perfect on-side kick, a pooch kick about 10 yards behind the Byrd front line. Called "catcher interference." HUGE momentum swing.

On a rare throw and catch for Byrd, they had an ineligible man downfield, committing offensive pass interference, a pick play, that resulted in a 3rd down conversion on Byrd's only TD drive of the night. Late in the game, Byrd was penalized for throwing a pass to #51, who caught the ball, on a 4th down try, and made a nice run. Too bad he's not an eligible receiver.

And, I was told, by Rummel fans who had a better angle, the Byrd runner who scored on the first series on the long run, stepped out-of-bounds as he was turning up field. I couldn't see it, and the replays didn't show where his feet were.

The refs sucked. And in game of evenly matched teams, it often comes down to the zebras' calls.

The Byrd announcers did say Rummel got hosed on the onside kick. Also, the times Twitter guys mentioned Haggerty stepped out of bounds on the big run. You should have heard the announcers begging for holding calls - it sound like me at a Tech game.

Rummel shut Byrd down in the 2nd half. Too bad the Jackets fumbled away the victory after a huge defensive stop.

I wouldn't say Byrd had the game won, but yeah, it was a huge break for Rummel. Especially since Byrd's fullback #35 collided with the QB causing the fumble. It was an unforced error.

But, that is how close that game was. 1 or 2 key plays swung the other way and it's a different result.

The guy from Rummel pulled a "Ryan Higgins" on their game winning "touchdown"... Except that there is no official review or coach's challenge in high school football. It was pretty clear on the jumbotron in the Dome that the ball out of his hands on the half yard line. There was a chorus of boos from the Byrd side.

    Re: It's Gameday!

I guess there was also a chorus of boos from the Byrd side when their guy stepped out of bounds on the first TD, but the refs missed that call. And the onside kick rip-off, surely the fair minded Byrd fans booed that call. And the fumbled lateral call ruled as a forward pass, another chorus of boos from the Byrd side.....no? Really?

Was at a party Friday night with some Byrd fans....

    "Rummel didn't win that game."

"In fact, the Byrd coaches said, Rummel didn't beat St. Augustine either, not really."

Oh! I see, Rummel didn't beat anybody! Guess that's why we have another championship trophy for the ole trophy case....
