Warning Shreveport Mayor: We still need LaTech-LSUS merger.

    Cedric B. Glover ‏@MayorGlover

Kudos to #Bossier Mayor Lo Walker et al & a big #Shreveport area welcome to @CSC!#800HighTechJobs!#800SpinOffJobs!

Today's @CSC announcement is why we still need to merge @LSU_Shreveport and @LATech!#BioMedicalAndCyberEngineering

To become great, metro regions need great colleges and universities. At least one should have a research focused role, scope and mission.

The #Shreveport area has great opportunities in areas like #DigitalMedia, #CyberAndBioEngineering, #Manufacturing and #ShaleEnergy.

    #NWLA
needs a higher education infrastructure that can help synergistically catalyze that potential into real wealth and job creation.

Sad, sobering and clarifying statement to me from a professor at @LSU_Shreveport, "I moved here 35 years ago. In that time neither the university or city have grown much. I can't help but believe the 2 are related."

He was very outspoken the first go-round when this came up. As well as the local chambers of commerce and many other leadership organizations.

As usual. Baton Rouge did not care what was in the best interest for NW LA.

He was in favor of the merger last go round, but it wasn't Baton Rouge that killed the merger. It was three Shreveport-Bossier politicians who killed it: Robert Adley, Barrow Peacock, and Greg Tarver. The legislature wasn't gonna pass something like that when the NWLA delegation was not in agreement on it.

KEEL radio is reporting that while Dr. Guice was in town yesterday for the news conference, he was asked about the possibility of La TECH acquiring the old Schumpert Hospital campus. Dr. Guice's response was (not exact quote), while La TECH is looking at many ways to strengthen the Shreveport / Bossier community, TECH has had no "formal" talks with Schumpert, at this time. I am not sure what all this means, but where there is smoke, there is usually fire.

LaTech Re: Shreveport Mayor: We still need LaTech-LSUS merger.

I am sitting in Schumpert @ Margaret Place as I type. My mother-in-law is in the rehab unit ( broken hip, 89 years old) which is still on the 7th floor of the Margaret Place hospital - the pathology lab, rehab and cancer treatment center are still in operation here and will be for at least three years. Quite honestly this is a well-maintained but aged hospital bed facility that, with the exception of these three operations, has been mothballed.

It is huge hospital facility and the cost to heat/cool, maintain/modernize and retro-fit is mind boggling. The tuition of 10,000 students could not cover those expenses. If Schumpert wants to give the facility with binding financial commitment for 15 years to cover utility/maintenance/up-grade/retro-fit (ala DOJ gift of England AFB to Alexandria) then maybe. Otherwise run away from it.

The better educational lab school opportunity for Tech in S'port is the Hamilton Terrace school which CPSB wants to discard. It is a former high school, with class rooms, gymnasium and cafeteria facility. In a re-developing area of Highland just off I-20. The shuttered Doctor'sHospital is across Louisiana and might be a better gift to pursue I have already suggested this to Dr. Guice.

Thats a nice picture and would be good to hear Tech's reach get into a city. But didn't LSU just restructure their system. All the satellite campuses are now officially under the LSU wing as before they were schools with just LSU in the name(could be wrong, not sure how that school system works). As an example LSU has been marketing LSUA as part of LSU and change it from LSU at A to LSU of A. I'm just trying to get clarification. Why would leaders of Shreveport want to still be interested in Tech if LSU is changing things?

They recognize that a metro area needs a research university, and that the lsu system is NEVER going to deliver that.

Wrong, part of the propaganda, LSU-xes are all just jumped up community colleges, no R&D focus/role. All the campuses still have their own admission standards and programs, if they did go to the satellite campus then students would have to meet lsuBR's enrollment standards (higher than Tech's standards). Right now LSUS offers a transfer program, for Petroleum Engineering and 2 or 3 others. You spend 2 years taking undergrad as an LSUS student, then transfer into lsuBR (if you have a good enough GPA) then finish taking satellite/internet classes to get your diploma (which you have to drive to BR to get).
