# 8 is a game changer. That one could lead to a ton of unintended consequences. Allowing them to pursue commercial opportunities will force them to have to hire financial advisors, lawyers, etc... and of course, make them susceptible to gambling influences.



So, who decides if it's a "legitimate" job?

Players were originally prevented from taking "legitimate employment" because their school's wealthy alumni would hire them for $20 a hour to read a meter once a day. They abused the system. It wasn't really "legitimate" employment. For instance, you rarely saw football players working at the local grocery store sacking groceries. Rather, most football players took jobs being paid exorbitant amounts of money for "guarding a warehouse" or some other job that paid far too much for the amount of real work involved.

Or turning on the AUTOMATIC SPRINKLERS at a complex.

I was kinda looking forward to NU players being forced to pay union dues and FICA, SS and Medicare taxes on their scholarships, free food, free shelter, free books, free medical care, free tutors, free excersize rooms, free weight room use, free use of athletic facilities, free lockers, free laundry, free athletic gear .....

Exactly. This is what I've been saying since this first became an issue. If these "scholarship athletes" want to be paid as professional employees, they better be prepared to pay taxes like everyone else.

They're specifically not asking for pay-for-play (at least not yet).

I think they just wanted to negotiate collectively for better conditions.
