First, the numbers are not accurate. Tech's revenue for its last year in the WAC - 2012-2013 was $18,570,493. The revenue number listed for Tech is perhaps 5 years old. UL-Lafayette's revenue number for 2012-2013 was $18,114,361.

Those numbers are from the Agreed Upon Procedures for the State of Louisiana released in January, 2014. Tech's number will increase with additional dollars from CUSA revenue sharing, including College Football Playoff Money. It will top $20 million in the next 2-3 years. Perhaps several million more when the new television contract between CUSA and Fox is in place by July, 2015.

At the same time, that only moves Tech up a few spots in the FBS rankings. To answer your question, the biggest difference between Tech and most of our CUSA rivals is the use of much larger student fees and/or general fund transfers for athletics. UL-Lafayette is in the same boat. Both schools transfer less than $7.5 million annually. No student fees go directly to general expenses, only for facility improvements or to pay bonded debt on facility projects. The state has allowed it in the past but only on a very small scale.

Until we are allowed to put a meaningful student fee in place (and I believe our students would pass it) of say $5 to $6 million per year, our budget will be grow at a relatively slow pace. The University of Louisiana System Board and the Board of Regents have not been willing to let the schools move forward in this way since increasing the transfer amount in 2006. It was between $2 to $3 million from 1994 to 2005.

A couple of years ago I would agree but I'm not so sure anymore. The way we keep getting charged more and more each year is definitely hurting students and I just can't see anyone wanting to pay another fee

A couple of years ago I would agree but I'm not so sure anymore. The way we keep getting charged more and more each year is definitely hurting students and I just can't see anyone wanting to pay another fee
Student Fee votes at Tech consistently win support from between 60% and 70% of the student body. This wouldn't be any different. It doesn't mean some students wouldn't vehemently be against it, but they would be in the minority. The last close student fee vote at Tech was in April, 1992 for the Centennial Plaza.

Why so much student support? Because more than 90% of our student body is on TOPS. For those of you who went to Tech from the 50s through the mid 90s and don't know about TOPS, that means the state pays a large percentage of the college costs for the vast majority of Tech's student body, largely because of selective admissions and fairly high admission standards

A few years ago, I asked Tech Vice President of Student Affairs Jim King how much I would pay if I was a freshman entering Tech today with my high school GPA and ACT scores. I was shocked. It was almost nothing. And that includes tuition and housing. At the same time, he was quick to point out the fact our students understand this. The vast majority will support a well-thought out plan that's presented correctly.

Good info. And that's a good strategy for recruiting in-state students. Now we need a plan to recruit good out-of-state students.

So, why didn't we take the SEZ project to the students 3 years ago?

Thanks. But on the USA Today list we're still coming in at #121, squeezed between FCS Sacramento St and FCS (maybe a 1st year FBS now?) Appalachian State. Still horrible when compared to our "peers".

We did two years ago. Part of the "Enhancement Fee" is for the end zone facility.

Oh. I didn't know the "Enhancement Fee" was the same thing as SEZ.

Then that begs the real question.......if the students approved the SEZ project 3 yrs ago, what took 'em so long to get started?

E$PN posted the first 2012-2013 athletic revenue database for the year along with this story. The figures reposted in this thread don't match the up-to-date E$PN database amounts for all schools. The USA Today database is still only for 2011-2012.

EE tried to do his usual stir the pot job over on the C-USA board. The university subsidy figures in the E$PN database do not include indirect university transfers. Since EE knows what Tech's indirect transfer is from the NCAA report posted on the LLA website, he wants to reduce Tech self-generated revenue to compare to other schools without reducing the other schools in the comparison.

That current list is still depressing. It just shows how piss poor leadership (over 20 or more years), marketing & vision can cripple a program.

HD, Tech should hire several recruiters that would live in the metroplex full-time and recruits the heck out of the North Dallas high schools. There are only so many kids that can get into UT or A&M and with the cost of Baylor, SMU and TCU being prohibitive for a lot of families, there are probably some high quality students that Tech could attract. The second 10% of top ranked student are probably the target. Pay the recruiters a base plus a bonus based on number of recruits that enroll at Tech. It would be an incredible return on investment.

I stand corrected. The support from our student body is even more than I had remembered.
