My father has a trap in his back yard. He traps them and then eats the critters
At any time of the day, there are at least 5 squirrels in my yard. Once, about 7 of them were together in a circle....about 3' in diameter. I should have taken a picture of them. It looked like they were having a meeting!

The critters have been trying to make nests in my oak trees all summer. I have a long pole I use to knock the nests down but they seem to rebuild within a week. I figure that by knocking down the nests I discourage them from making an attempt to work their way into the attic when it gets colder where they have a tendency to gnaw on wires and start fires.
A few weeks ago I read where they are deterred by shiny moving objects. I got some brick layers line, a cd, and a half inch steel pipe joiner. I ran the line through the cd from one edge through the hole to the opposite edge with knots to keep it vertical then a few feet down I tied the pipe joiner. I took my long pole (which has a paint brush taped to the end for sealing cut tree branches) and put the line through the bristles of the brush just above the cd. I lifted the end of the pole just over a branch then twisted the pole so the line fell on the branch just above the cd (make sure you hold on to the other end of the line). Then tied the line off around the tree trunk. I have been squirrel free for about a month now. My neighbors are inundated with them. I hope this countermeasure continues to work as I have read that they eventually figure out that the reflections from the cd are not a threat.

What a timely post. For the first year ever, the squirrels have found our about-to-ripen big tomatoes. I've chased them off, but they're not scared of me. We've tried a trap in the past, but it didn't work. Any pointers on how to make that work, Dawgbert? I will suggest DH try the CD idea and see what happens.
Lead poisoning is 100% effective. :icon_wink:
