Houston, a "bream" is a bluegill or goggle-eye, or sunfish, etc. A "crappie" is a white perch, sac-a-lait, spec, etc. Louisiana and Texas have a reciprocal agreement. That means if you live in La., and have a valid fishing license, you do not need a Texas license. What a deal!

There you go again with your So. La. names - sac-a-lait. When I was growing up no one spoke French in No. La. We caught bream, perch, cat fish and the occasional bass. Also down here near the Texas Coast a spec(K) is a salt water speckled trout as in "the specs are running".

I've only heard them called sac-a-lait a few times, and I've lived in N LA my whole life. I'd say they're called perch more often than crappie, but it's still fairly common. I do a fair amount of fishing on Calcasieu so I know exactly what you mean about the specks. They're fun to catch and really good eating

Really?! Every time I've fished in Texas, I bought an out of state license! I've wasted so much money! :bigcry:

I beleive that applies only to boundary waters such as Toledo Bend, Sabine, and Caddo(?).

Houston, you are absolutely correct. I do know, however, that the game wardens around here will not cite you if you are from La. or Oklahoma. That may just a personal preference by them, though. Sorry for any confusion.

That's interesting, nonetheless. I'll have to do some more checking into that before I head over to the great state of Texas later this summer.

As you can probably tell I'm not really a fisherman. Last time I caught anything worth keeping was when I was about eight or nine and it was a perch or bream. Had a beach cabin for many years and tried surf fishing but all I got was hard head cat fish. We use to just throw them over the dune, but now you have to keep them or throw them back in the water. I don't believe they even made good bait.
