It recognizes those alumni who have achieved in their professions while remaining loyal to their university.

Phil fits the bill for this, certainly. He's not gone above and beyond for Tech, but he has put his education to good use and shown what a Tech grad can do.

I don't know why we put out an official statement.

If by "did it happen" you mean the protest? I saw Dr. [redacted ] coming back afterwards but had no clue why and didn't think anything of it. 3 people does not a successful protest make.

I think you'll find the intellectual elites will agree with most blacks. It's impossible for them to be bigots or racist. One must be white, Christian, and being a male always helps.

Man, I didn't really care one way or another until I heard about this "protest," but now I wish Phil had been there at graduation to speak up for the merits of the family (you know, the one which has a father and a mother, the way God intended it.)

My point is (I guess) that he's not been unloyal. Especially in an area of the state where its expected to pretend you went somewhere other than Tech, he's never done anything of the sort. To my knowledge.

I think we should also be careful not to give the Tower to people who just gave a lot of money to us. Sure, that's a good thing for them to do, but in itself does not necessitate the Tower.

Out of the famous Tech alumns, I think it would have been more appropriate to give the award to Trace Adkins before Phil. Trace is very successful and loyal to our university.

Honestly, I'd rather think we gave the Tower Medallion to someone who only gave us money than that we gave it to someone simply because he doesn't deny his association to us.

During a one-hour rain delay on Saturday at the Crowne Plaza Invitational golf tourney at Colonial in Ft. Worth I was able to visit with many in the gallery. You know all the standard questions people ask of each other. Who you for? What do you do for a living? Where do you live?
I talked to about 5 different folks in the concession line and then at the tables. I was wearing Tech garb. When I said "West Monroe". They inquired about Duck Dynasty. Uncle Si. Phil Robertson and then Terry Bradshaw and Tech. ALL OF THEM gave favorable comments. Nothing. NOTHING negative about the Robertsons . . . or Phil's beliefs or publicly reviewed opinions, which we discussed.
That is just as important as money to one's alma mater.
