Raise your hand if you think Wade Simoneaux is a good coach.

He was given twelve years to prove that he could coach, and we have nothing to show for it ... except excuses.

According to him, over the years, it was everyone's and everything's fault but his: budgets, players, travel, fans, facilities, ice machines, etc.

Twelve years, four different A.D.'s and a plethora of excuses, but the reality is none of these excuses can explain his poor Xs and Os, his high roster turnover, and refusal to make changes in the lineup. These are things that he could control ... but he failed to do an adequate (or even mediocre) job.

The bottom line is the dude was not a good coach during his tenure at Tech and received about six more years than most would have been allotted to prove themselves.

Now, let's put this decade-plus debacle behind us and get a coach who focuses on making the team the best he can, not excuses.

Because I felt like it. Is that good enough for you?

Or better yet, read some of the other thread and you will see that some haven't.

2008 season. Picked preseason to finish at top of WAC. Several returning productive starters. Did not make the tournament that WE HOSTED!! He might be a good assistant coach but head coach - NO.

Compared to Gravy - which should be the standard for Tech head coaches - there is none. Gravy always put together a mixture of high school & Juco players to be field a very competitive team each year. On a scale from 1-10 Gravy was around a 7, Sim a 4 is being generous. Again, he might be a good assistant coach.

Might make a good groundskeeper, but that's it.

Had a talk with Gravy about Sim four weeks into his job and he told me that the game was changing drastically, and he was glad to be "retired" because he would not perform at his former level in "new" college baseball. He echoed the very frustrations Sim has been saying today and he did it back then. Sadly, nothing changed the whole time he was here and I fear any new coach will be well-intentioned, but unable to perform a a level we desire. He pointed to our not never being a national power because of these drawbacks and would be in a downward spiral even with Tommy Lasorda running the ship. He knew then that Ruston was not the ideal destination for the new breed of college prospects and considered himself lucky to win with local talent. He was encouraged to recruit locally and have a JC's mixed in, and that's how he won. But he didn't win at LSU's level (and now USL 's) and said they along with Tulane would always out recruit and outspend us in baseball. He said JC's were in JC's for a reason and if we relied on them too heavily, they would only screw up our APR.

He hated the fact that the only people who cared were a handful of former players and a few folks around town.. After them, no one would ever care about Tech baseball.

He predicted USL would always be better Than us because of facilities and a presidents support that he (and we) didn't have. He predicted sim wouldn't get it done either and would get run. In my last sit down with Gravy, about two weeks before he and his wife died, he commented that if sim couldn't get ER done here, it would be hard to find a name coach to follow him because it wouldn't be the coaching .... It was would be a lack of administrative and local support. He said sim would get run because we were not in a hotbed of talent and our facilities would always be mediocre, even with renovations that Sim was promised would come He didn't think sim was lacking in his X's and O's ... Only lacking in talent that he couldn't lure away from LSU, USL and Tulane. Therefore, he filled holes with what was left over and prayed for miracles. The miracles never occurred.

    USL's budget priorities:
    Football
    Men's Basketball
    Baseball
    Softball
    Women's Basketball

    Our old priorities:
    Football
    Women's Basketball
    Men's Basketball
    ...

    ...
    Baseball
    Softball

We have to make choices on budgets every single year. I think our choices in the past have been poor to put it mildly.

Our AD is about to get the chance to show what his priorities are--he'll be hiring a new coach at the same time a new budget/fiscal year begins.

My biggest concern is that he will not be open to taking advice from those in the business and those who have contacts through-out baseball and instead we will have a narrow search with a slim field of prospects from low level FBS schools and select FCS schools

I learned along time ago to listen to folks who have contacts and are successful in their fields or professions - even though the decision ultimately rested on my shoulders

I think the WBB coaching salaries will be cause for much concern. I'll feel better about TMac after I see one of his football skeds come together.
