Yeah, a three second highlight after watching hours of guys in shorts rolling around on the ground grappling with intense pain that seems to magically go away after a bit of spray or when the yellow card comes out for their opponent. Then they seem to be fine.

In hockey they'd be sitting in the box two minutes for embellishment.

Try watching either of Robbin's goals from yesterday...both of those spinoramas were clinical. In fact Robbin had several other highlights yesterday that didn't end up in the back of the net that were better than anything the NBA has produced in the last month.

Through Costa Rica's dominating 2nd half demolition of Uruguay...22 goals in 6 matches...NO draws...only one match with less than 3 goals scored and four with 4 goals or more. Even the one game with one goal allowed actually had three with two Mexico goals incorrectly disallowed on offsides by a linesman (he doesn't qualify for an assistant referee title) who should already be on his way home.

What's the difference between a 3-1 soccer match and a 21-7 football game? Football awards more points for scoring.

    Re: World Cup Starts Today!!!

American football is.....and I honestly don't know the real numbers.....about maybe 20 mins of actual play, and 40 mins of the clock running while players mill around waiting for the next play.

Baseball is slow. Especially when the pitcher is worried about the base-runner on 1st. Think about that exciting action, eh.

Golf! I love playing, although I don't play like I used to, and HOPE to again. But as a spectator sport....well.

Hoops. One might say, aha! but truthfully since both teams WILL score a certain amount of points, in CBB it's about 60, in the NBA 80+, that "scoring" becomes routine and almost meaningless. Like, big deal, somebody scored, whoop-tee-doo! It's expected.

Of course, I like all of the above....well, not really the NBA, I don't watch it.....and I appreciate what sets each sport apart from the others.

For me...and about 3.5 billion others worldwide....I enjoy the world's most spectacular sporting event. Period.

"offside" in soccer is simple. A player cannot be in an offside position and play the ball.

    What constitutes an "offside position"?

A player must have TWO opposing players between himself and the opponent's goal line at the time the ball is played by a teammate. If not, then he is "offside."

However, the position of the ball comes into play as well. Any player "behind the ball" that is, if the ball is closer to the opponent's goal line than the player, he is not offside.

A player can NOT be offside on his own half of the field, nor can he be offside directly off a throw-in.

If a player, in an offside position, at the judgment of the refs, does not attempt to enter the play and does not interfere in the play, that play can be allowed to continue. That same player can "re-enter" the flow of play once he is no longer in an offside position.

    There you go....really simple.

Even 8 year olds pick this up fairly quickly. Actually, it all makes sense when you play the game. And it is logical too, to keep attacking players from camping out in front of the opposition's goal.

Let me add an emphasis here, a player is deemed to be offside if he receives the ball directly from a teammate while in an offside position. A player in an offside position can play the ball if it was last played by an opposing player. In other words, a player in an offside position can intercept a pass, i.e. one that was in the possession of the other team who was trying to pass to one of his teammates.

Another, sometimes, call a ref has to make is when a pass is made by a teammate to a player in an offside position, but the ball is touched, tipped, by a defending player. If it's merely "tipped" offside is called. If the defending player more or less gains possession or dramatically alters the path of the ball, it can be ruled that that player "played" the ball and therefore renders the offside voided. That is, the attacking player can gain control of the ball and continue play. This is a judgment call and is rarely made.

    Speaking of refs' calls...

the US has been royally screwed every World Cup since the beginning of time. Or, dating back to 1930 anyway...

US goals have been disallowed, that were clearly goals on the replay. PKs have been awarded to the opposition, notably Ghana the last two WCs, that were, at best, very questionable calls. Is it just bad luck or a conspiracy?

In 2014, with this team, against this quality opposition, the US can use some "questionable" calls going our way. Not holding my breath though.....

    USA !

Does the general public really understand offsides in hockey? Probably not, but it doesn't stop them from enjoying the thrill of playoff hockey. Dawg80 did a good job of explaining what it is. In simple explanation, there's no cherry-picking allowed.
