    Rooster,

Keep in mind it will be difficult to ever build that type of facility in that area. The flooding in 1989, which nearly destroyed the softball field, led the athletic department to ask an engineering firm in Shreveport - what's now Aillet, Fenner, Jolly, and McClelland - to study whether even the softball field could remain where it is now. That whole area looked like a B-52 practice range there were so many sinkholes. It took Coach Galloway, Tech Buildings & Grounds, and a group of volunteers months to repair it all.

Since then, Tech hasn't built any permanent structure in that entire area. And it heavily flooded again in 2000.

It would be nice to have a tennis building like Wichita State has. Notice the chairback seating on the far side of the building.

Sports I'd like to see eliminated and replaced:
    1. Bowling (not a C-USA sponsored sport and not really a sport in general)
    2. Tennis (We are probably approaching close to a decade since we've had an American on the team.)

    Replacement sports:
    1. Swimming and diving
    2. Women's golf (if Squire Creek allows it)

Is that the reason you'd like to see tennis eliminated?

One of the reasons, but don't misunderstand me. I'm not against signing international players to our athletic programs. I think we should always go after the best student-athletes no matter where they are from, high school/juco, or anything else. I've been very consistent with that stance in football and baseball when many others have argued otherwise. However, when we haven't signed a single American in a particular sport in over a decade, I think that sport needs to be evaluated. Why is that an issue? Because I think it's our mission to 1) serve the people in this state, and 2) serve the people of this nation. Other than tuition and private support, the state and federal government is where our school gets its funding. Are we serving either mission by sponsoring a sport that we can't get a single American (much less a Louisianan) to sign to play for us in a decade? Every decent American female tennis player is getting an opportunity, but there are a lot of American swimmers who won't get an opportunity to compete in college and get a scholarship because there are fewer opportunities. (I'm obviously talking female here. Like in most all other non-football sports, males have even less of an opportunity, but don't get me started on that.)

We haven't come close to winning a conference championship in women's tennis since we were in the Southland and likely never will again. We finished in last place in the WAC almost every year. The team has improved in the last couple years, but with 14 women's tennis teams in the conference, our limited budget, our lacking tennis facility, and lack of commitment to tennis, we'll probably never contend for a conference title. We have a lot better chance a winning a conference championship in a sport like swimming and diving with only 7 C-USA teams in it. We have a nice new swimming facility, and there's a dearth of DI swimming programs in our region. And yes, we can fill a swimming roster with Americans. The other sport I mentioned was women's golf. We have one of the nicest golf facilities in the state, and there's three less women's golf programs than women's tennis programs in C-USA. Thus, we'd have a better chance competing a title in that sport as well. Why should we continue to sponsor a sport in which we have little chance of winning a title when there are other sports we could offer in which we'd have a better chance to win a title?

Also, I think tennis is a dying sport in America, similar to boxing, which we no longer sponsor. Why should we continue to invest in a sport that's dying in America when we have opportunities in other sports in which Americans actually still compete at the collegiate level?

Title IX. It's cheap. Bowling too.

None of the non-revenue sports really matter other than Title IX compliance.

    I take exception to that.

Those student athletes are all outstanding young women representing our university. I think they matter.

I'm sorry you had to break away from the WNBA game to address this post.

Sand volleyball probably is the cheapest women's sport for us to add, or even to replace an existing women's sport.
