1. Hip-hop is a platform that reaches a large and growing audience.
2. Hip-hop, as a genre, originating from a culture that has historically been politically oppressed, embraces political speech more so than almost any other genre of music.
3. Within the genre of Hip-hop, artists have different opinions and experiences upon which they draw their opinions including political opinions.
4. Hip-hop artists have varying degrees of talent at how they communicate their messages and to what type of audiences their message is intended to be communicated to.
5. Hip-hop owns more Pulitzer Prizes than rock and country combined.
6. According to Nielsen Music’s 2017 end of year report, R&B/hip-hop has overtaken Rock to become the most consumed genre of music. In streaming it isn’t even close - it is consumed almost as much as pop and rock combined.
With all that in mind, I don’t think it is safe to generalize anything about the quality of the message or the ability of hip-hop artists to deliver it in a way that is meaningful or influential.
