Excellent insight into Tyler from the book Sum It Up by Pat Summit: In 2012 Tyler coached a 17-and-under girls team to a club championship. In a critical playoff game, due to college entrance exams, only 5 players were available. Tyler had firm "arrive one hr before the game or be benched for two minutes" policy. A star player missed the deadline by 15 minutes. Tyler drew up a diamond defense and his team played the first two minutes with only four players while the girl was there on the bench. She later fouled out and his team finished the game with four players and the diamond defense AND WON. Pat writes "that's my boy." (pages 370-71).
Pat Summitt once benched star player Candace Parker (Summit says best player she ever coached) for a half in a game in Parker's home town of Chicago in front of Parker's family against #15 DePaul because of a rule violation. The teams co-captains agreed. "No one gets special treatment." She says early in her career she learned to have just a few rules (instead of many) but enforce those few rules firmly.
Lulu will be missed: a lot. We all hope she learns a great life lesson here and goes on to much success. I love having coaches who have integrity and values and honor our girls as more that just ball players. Looking so forward to seeing our team in action.
