    LSU-Shreveport Updates (September 2014)

I just read through the agenda for the LSU System Board of Supervisors meeting this month. I saw two letters from Larry Clark (the new LSU-S Chancellor) to Dr. Alexander, LSU President. Things seem to be going from bad to worse at LSU-Shreveport.

The letter dated July 31, 2014 states that the LSU-S reserves "are just about exhausted", and the university eliminated $585,000 in positions to start the current fiscal year. This letter is found on page 69 of the attached link to the LSU meeting agenda.

The second letter dated August 15, 2014 states that 4114 students attend the university (as of Fall 2013), but 775 of them are high-school dual-enrollment students from which LSU-S receives little money. This letter is found on Pages 729-732 of the LSU meeting agenda link.

Thanks TechAlum05 for posting this. Figuratively speaking, they have a tiger by the tail and it's threatening to eat them alive. Its a tough situation and this current fiscal year may be their tipping point.

No problem. I'm thinking about writing an article about how much (or little) of the LSU Shreveport Commitment Plan has been followed in the last 2.5 years. So far, the only things that LSU has followed through on are offering those five LSU degree programs at Shreveport and a few other minor details. I also want to review some of the op-eds and speeches made by LSU-S and LSU people during the merger talks and compare/contrast their words with their actions.

So let me get this straight?

NVM, 775 are high school students, so their actual student body is less than 4k

Interestingly enrollment at BPCC is twice this.

Why are we keeping this institution afloat again?

Correct. The high school dual-enrollment students are included in the announced enrollment figures, since they are enrolled at LSUS and taking college courses. The problem with the dual-enrollment students for LSUS is that these students don't spend money on campus on food, student supplies, athletics, etc.

The actual undergrad/graduate student body (not including dual-enrollment students in high school) is about 3350. It also means the actual undergraduate student enrollment at LSUS is around 2900.

Why are we keeping this institution afloat again?
Because LSU-Shreveport bought into a bogus "Commitment Plan" which for the most part isn't worth the toilet paper it's printed on.

Before this is over, I'm not going to be surprised if LSU-S asks to come sit at our table. What they're being fed by the LSU system ain't cake. More like a fresh patty from the north end of a south bound bovine.

Might be a good thing if someone would accurately point out to the stakeholders just how poorly LSU is following through with their promises and plans.

The problem is that those stakeholders don't care as long as they have box seats at tigger stadium every year.

I especially like the part about "increased admission requirements" being part of their decline in enrollment. During the merger talk, Tech's admission requirements were one of the reasons the anti's gave and now that they've jumped in bed with the flagship they are subject to its requirements. As of now, LSUS will be dead-ass-broke by the spring and will need every bit of the $1.2 million line of credit just to finish out the school year and have no reserves to start making the payments on it (which begin as soon as they begin borrowing money)

At the rate they are going, the athletes might not be Pilots for a lot longer. The school colors and logo have changed, and a mascot will be selected shortly to replace Pete the Pilot.

Sounds good to me. We'll have that campus in Shreveport someday unless we move 100% on to another.

BTW, the August letter also states that LSU-Shreveport is expected to have more part-time grad students (online through Academic Partnerships) and fewer on-campus undergraduate students in Fall 2014 compared to Fall 2013.
