What incentive is there to expand the playoffs? It may be team number 5, team number 9, team 17. It doesn't matter. Someone will feel left out. Expanding the playoff does nothing.

Depends on who #5 is. 8 allows all p5 champs a seat with 3 at-large. Expansion is coming.

What good does that serve? It's more likely IMO that it becomes P4 than expand the playoffs. 4 team playoff with 4 power conferences is the dream scenario.

Not if you're a one loss dynasty program like UT or Bama.

The p5 are not content with just champs. Gotta provide for at-large. B1G may be the expansion driver.

    ^^^^THIS!!! My sentiments, exactly.

Sure it does. You've got more people intimately involved with the playoffs because THEIR TEAM is in it.

That's the standard talking point against more than 4.

It gives conferences a chance. The Big10 will likely be left out every year. The ACC is very lucky to have Florida State, but one slip up and they are out. Another ACC team is not likey even without a conference championship game. When the SEC does away with its championship game, they will likely have two teams every year. Not fair in the eyes of all the left coast and northern liberals.

The commissioners as it stands right now with the P5 want 8 -

In reality that is all that matters and TV is willing to pay a kingly sum for 4 more teams

That said - I don't see it growing past 8 teams

Of course there are no guarantees, but the odds are the best team in the country is in the top six with two buffer spots. I think eight does it.

They will change the rules to determine the teams before they add playoff spots.

You are dead wrong on that. I know for a fact that they do not. If they did then it already would be 8.

It hasn't yet. And if a top 2 seed wins the whole thing then it still did nothing.

Again you assume that all 5 power conferences survive. This is the crux to the discussion. I've previously stated that I think one dies soon.

Also I don't get where you think anyone will do away with the championship games. The SEC makes plenty of money off theirs. Others will soon serve as the quarter finals that you say are certain.
