Its a margin of victory ranking, Marshall has been raining points down on people lot. Its natural that they would be numero uno in that regard. MSU has been winning, but their margins aren't as dramatic as Marshall's.

The margin of victory has a tapering function that reduces it so the effect is not as great. I don't really like that Marshall is up so high either, but I do not wanna tamper with the algorithm to produce a result I think makes sense. That makes me as bad as the AP/BCS/What have you.

Because of the mitigating factor, Marshall's actually getting fewer algorithm points/game than on most of our games, but since they're 9-0, the average is really high. For MSU, they've had some close wins (LSU, Arkansas) that just should not have happened, so the score was a bit lower to bump the ranking down. The algorithm is 84% accurate so I'm happy to have just a few anomalies.

One can easily make the argument that Mississippi State's competition has been much more dramatic than the teams that Marshal has played. If Marshal played any top 15 team, the game would most likely look like the Hawaii/Georgia game that was played a few years back.
