Net Neutrality - What's It Mean & Why Should I Care?

I'm seeing Obama is touting Net Neutrality. I've done a little reading but I'm really not up to speed. What I've read appears biased depending on the side they represent. While I don't trust Obama, I also don't trust Comcast/ATT/Verizon/Sprint and the other ISPs.

Would someone with knowledge put this into perspective? This may be a 'lesser of two evils' situation....I just don't know.

I'm for net neutrality, even if an ISP was forced to give everyone the same access, a bandwidth hog (Netflix) could pay more to get better access for it's customer. I do not like the ISP's having power to reduce bandwidth to punish/extort higher access fees though, which is what some have, and will do again. Imagine if Tech became the next Boise State and BBB suddenly had a spike in traffic/popularity, then our ISP started throttling our bandwidth access and said we would have to pay more to get increased bandwidth.

The GOP is against net neutrality, which is no big surprise.

Amen! And Obama hasn't been good for America either. Therefore more government regulation imposed by Obama's will and his warped "logical thinking" is bound to be atrocious for America and it's people.

Though rare, there are exceptions. This is one of those. Net neutrality is a good thing. Television companies, movie companies, internet servie providers, etc. and the government already do enough to limit the flow of information. We don't need to give them any more power to limit it further.

I hate some people's opinions too, but I don't want them to be silenced.

But it sounds, looks and smells like something a Hitler or socialist/marxist would take advantage of or at least try.

What the hell are you reading to get to that conclusion?

Hitler was okay with banning books, especially those of people he doesn't like. Lenin and Stalin, too. Letting any company or the government control what information gets to consumers is Hitler/socialist/marxist, whatever stupid unrelated identifier else you want to include.

The Nazi Propaganda Ministry, directed by Dr. Joseph Goebbels, took control of all forms of communication in Germany: newspapers, magazines, books, public meetings, and rallies, art, music, movies, and radio. Viewpoints in any way threatening to Nazi beliefs or to the regime were censored or eliminated from all media.
This is BAD. This is what you get without net neutrality.

if we were using more bandwidth, you don't think we should pay for it? if the company providing the service has to spend more money because of us, do you think everyone who uses the company should pay for the upgrade?

Republican's are way wrong on this. The only argument against it is "Obama's idea".

He's a bafoon for sure, but Net Neutrality is a great thing.

Americans pay over twice as much for internet service and get way less than half the speed of other industrialized countries. Yeah, we have competition among internet providers-competition to see which one can best fleece the American customer.

Americans pay over twice as much for healthcare and get less than half the medical services of other industrialized countries. The solution? Obummercare!

    This sounds familiar, eh.

Net Neutrality? Okay....let's wait until we have a market-savvy Republican President and a Republican Congress, then let's visit this issue. I'd feel better waiting until 2017 to change things.
