UNO president calls for program, personnel cuts

    http://neworleanscitybusiness.com/blog/2014/12/04/uno-president-calls-for-program-personnel-cuts/

President Peter Fos has come forward with his recommendations for eliminating programs and personnel at the University of New Orleans.

His restructuring report comes after a months-long in-house review of the school’s 80 academic programs, which arrived at many of the same conclusions. Fos is calling for an end to seven degree-granting programs: bachelor of early childhood education; masters in special education, political science and romance languages; and Ph.Ds in curriculum and instruction, special education and political science.

More... "Saying good-bye to the University of New Orleans"

"But the suffering of our universities is also painfully ironic given that so much of the suffering has happened on the watch of our highly educated governor, Bobby Jindal. Who'd have thought that the legacy of a Rhodes Scholar, a bonafide wunderkind, would be the withering of our higher education system? It would have been hard to imagine. But there's no denying it. During the Jindal years, higher education has suffered. By January 2014, $700 million had been cut from higher ed."

    From that article:

Fos also advises removing four positions from the university’s library, seeking to put its staffing levels in line with that of Louisiana Tech University, which like UNO is part of the University of Louisiana System. Doing so would save another $250,000 next school year

For YEARS on this forum we have discussed eliminating duplication of programs, hell! eliminating some entire schools! What Jindal has done is, in a way, forced Darwinism into the bloated ULS, LSU, Southern systems (wow! three systems, hmmm...). The entire university system(s) in Louisiana were on a slippery slope of major financial crash! Thousands of positions have been eliminated, $millions saved, and schools have been forced to be smarter, and! to get off their lazy asses and hustle alternative means of funding.

As a result, the system(s) are on solid financial ground, leaner/meaner, and schools, like UNO and others, are continuing to better manage themselves. Thank you Governor Jindal for NOT kicking the can down the street and for being an adult in charge.

Re: UNO president calls for program, personnel cuts

To me, what Jindal has done FOR Louisiana higher-ed is the same as this:

before Jindal the Lt Gov-nar's office had a huge pool of money to hand out for tourist-related events across the state. Jindal cut that amount, did not eliminate it, but cut back the allocation to that pool. Well, that caused angst across the state. Like in Natchitoches where they were getting $1.2 million of taxpayer money to put on the Christmas Festival. After the cut, Natch's allocation dropped to $250K, and has since grown to about $300K. OMG! The "takers" around here wanted to lynch Jindal ....oh, can I say "lynch?".....but, funny thing, you will note that the Festival hasn't missed a beat. Now Natch has had to find other means.....like corporate sponsorships, charging admission, actually charging and collecting from the merchants on the river front, etc....

Again, thank you Jindal for being an adult in charge. Never could understand why some hardworking, tax paying Louisiana folks across the state had to pay for the private parties for the mayor and others during the festival....

Just think, if Jindal had been around in 1950, there would be no NLULM and Tech would have 18,000 students.

You're absolutely right. In fairness though, Louisiana looked very different in 1950, and I'm not sure the leadership at Louisiana Polytechnic Institute had a vision of being a National Doctoral Research, Statewide University back then, either. Some of you older Dawgs who lived it, or those versed well in Tech history keep me honest here...but I think back then, we were more or less content to be a "little regional college" --- I believe I even read that Dr. R.L. Ropp was offered the state's Pharmacy school AND PASSED ON IT. Is that right?

Which is the way it should be. Plus no lsuA and Nichols, Dillard, as well as NWSt should be a JUCO.
There are way too many colleges and universities in Louisiana with it's income/tax/revenue base

Dillard is private. Methodist, I think.

    But your point stands.

Sounds like they are suggesting smart cuts to me. Schools are being forced to look at what is important and getting rid of programs that add little value.

To balance the state's budget will require something being done with state contracts. That'll be a tough nut to crack...and someone willing to be a one-term guv-nar, while being raped in the press and by every special interest group. It will also require enough legislators to man up and do the right thing. Also, one-termers, no doubt. The pioneers take the arrows.
