Football Final Four and Sunday's comments

About a week ago, the chairman of the Playoff Committee commented about Tech's qualities and said something to the effect that we are presentable except for the fact we had a "loss to NSU, a FCS team."

Today, about the 3rd or 4th talking head was asked about P5 scheduling in the future and he said something to the effect "Northwestern State, Buffalo . . . ." and others will be left out on P5 scheduling from now on.

You can say hit dog hollars, but if we are going to play the G5 Access Bowl slot game every year, we need to have a solid scheduling plan for us to even get a snif from the Committee and their computers.

We essentially have to be the best team of the group of 5. In my opinion, it will take some strategic scheduling to achieve 11 wins and have a decent SOS. Our shot of getting a New Year's Bowl is much better in the current format. Under the BCS format, we would have to go undefeated and then it would still not be likely.

No, under the BCS format in 2012 we needed to go undefeated in the WAC and could not do that.

This year NSU being on the schedule did not keep us out. Losing to NSU, ODU, and Marshall kept us out. We could have won all three games.

If we want to play 6 home games every year or at least most years, an FCS game is necessary. Two money games is always going to be necessary.

If we'd been 11-1 with a win over either OU or Auburn, we'd have been the top non-P5 team. If we're going to keep playing a couple of quality teams, I don't think we have to worry much about one 1-AA team.

10-2 with losses to OU and Auburn and we would have been ahead of Boise.

Also, when the talking heads were discussing why Baylor got left out they mentioned their horrible OOC slate, and it went something like this:

"Gimme a break, Baylor played SMU, Buffalo and NORTHWESTERN STATE (said with emphasis and a roll of the eyes )." I thought....oops, and shhhh! no one say a thing.

Another thing is that we need to make ourselves attractive to the P5 schools so they will put us on their schedules. A good G5 team may be in high demand. We were a quality win for Auburn and OU this year. You don't want to hear them saying, "Baylor needs to stop scheduling Louisiana Tech and Central Michigan." I don't want to see them leaving out G5 teams all together... we need the money!

They can't leave them(us) out all together. Not enough teams to go around.

Scheduling P5 teams will continue for us. I'm not sure we will ever be scheduled by a P5 "because we are attractive". Boise gets a mention of respect from time to time. Fresno does to, but not deserved. What you talk about is perception, but giving them help in the computers is as much of a schedulinig crap shoot for them as us catching a P5 team while they are down.

I hope so. This seems to be headed towards, "Let's just all play each other." (P5 vs P5). Have their own league and we are basically back to FCS.

Not sure where you are getting this other than a few talking heads. The Sunbelt and MAC are the only two conferences not committed yet, but even if the P5 teams conspired to cut out all the little guys, there are not enough teams to fill their schedules. Math may be difficult for the talking head types, but it proves their diarrhea of the mouth to be wrong.

Why couldn't they just play 11 conference games and 1 OOC game against another P5 program?

Under the current qualification rules the bowl system would be destroyed. There would not be enough 6 win teams to fill their bowl slots. Also, imagine the SEC West on steriods. That's what you'd get with more in conference games. P5 teams dream of going undefeated, not winning 8 games.

Saying all that, I think when they go to an 8 team playoff they will cut at least one game from the schedules anyway.

I believe one reason they picked Ohio State is that there would be less noise for an 8 team playoff.

...yes they could play with 5 wins.

We need to get home/home games with P5 teams like Iowa State, Kansas (even though we don't play them well), Kentucky, Vandy, Duke (been good lately), Indiana, Purdue, Wake Forest, Syracuse, Oregon State, Colorado.

I know it's highly unlikey to get h/h - but 2/1 would work if we spread them out properly.

I know our fans want these games, but we need money. We can't make $1M from a home game vs. WF or Colorado.

2 for 1s shouldn't happen. Maybe a team like Miss.St, Ole Miss, or Arkansas, but we are probably about to have the next game in Ruston bought out by Miss St.. that is the norm with 2 for 1s.

But when we get a home game bought out, we still come out ahead of where we'd have been by just scheduling an away game to begin with.

Because we can always add a late road game.

Option 1 (scared of getting bought out, so just don't bother):

    Year1 - @P5 team A, @ P5 team B
    Year 2 - @P5 team C, @ P5 team D
    Year 3 - @P5 team E, @ P5 team F

Option 2 (what the heck, maybe they come to Ruston, and they actually do)

    Year 1 - @P5 team A, @P5 team B
    Year 2 - @P5 team A (again), @P5 team C
    Year 3 - P5 team A at home, @P5 team D

Option 3 (they buy the game out)

    Year 1 - @P5 team A, @P5 team B
    Year 2 - @P5 team A (again), @P5 team C
    Year 3 - @P5 team D, @P5 team E (plus cash from P5 team A buying out contract).

Option 4 (they buy it out, and manage to pull off another home game somehow, like starting a home and home with another G5 team).

    Year 1 - @P5 team A, @P5 team B
    Year 2 - @P5 team A (again), @P5 team C
Year 3 - @P5 team D, "extra" home game for the season with G5 team A (plus cash from P5 team A to make up some of the difference of not playing a non-return game).
