??? I'm totally fine with Houston Bates winning it on Friday. Sure others like Dixon, X and Henderson had great games but Bates won the MVP which matched his game very well.

Bates was a good story, but Woods accounted for a 14 point swing. He saved a TD run for Illinois and then had the pick 6.
Not gonna play.
To start a thread like this is disrespectful to HB, imo.
Woods but no problem with Bates, he was great as well.
HB, simply because he was the main pressure on the QB. Without that pressure, we lose. 5.5 (really 6.5) sacks is insane.
I always wonder why we want an MVP. After we completed our restoration of two homes in Lacombe after Katrina, the church called me to the pulpit and presented an MVP award to me. My response was to say that without the team effort of over 120 people who volunteered, the financial support, and prayer support, I could have done almost nothing, and certainly could not have made a significant difference in the lives of the home owners. As a team we won.
Very good point. And the "team effort" is really what led to the great season. The players had to buy into the team concept. I think Diaz's comments on November 3rd really sum things up pretty well. http://www.latechsports.com/sports/m...110314aaa.html
On having multiple guys get two interceptions in games this season:
"I think what our players believe, whether it is tackling or big plays, is that if everyone is doing their job, then the offense decides who gets to make the big play. On Adairius Barnes' first interception, Mitch Villemez is unblocked. Mitch can get the sack if the quarterback chooses to get sacked, or the quarterback could have thrown the swing to the back, but Houston Bates peeled on the back. Then he had a short five-yard route he could have thrown, but Kentrell Brice had jumped the five-yard route."
"It is a multiple choice question. What he had left was: a.) get sacked by Villemez and we would be talking about Villemez today, b.) throw it to Houston Bates who might have pick-sixed it, c.) throw it to Kentrell Brice who might have intercepted it, d.) throw it to Adairius Barnes, or of course, e.) throw it out of bounds."
"That is what our players understand is that the sugar they get from making the play, really the offense decides who gets to make the play. In our run defense, if we build a wall, the running back runs into whatever brick in the wall and that is the guy who makes the tackle and everyone rallies and makes the assists. The players have bought into that team concept. They know there are plays to be made everywhere, because later on, it might have been Adairius Barnes covering his man and doing a great job off the line to allow Houston Bates to get the sack. That is where they see the communal nature of our defense and how we all help each other out to make plays.""
Be a lefty: EVERYONE gets MVP.
Xavier and Villemz get honorable mention but this was Bates award all along.
Cam Manning
Have you considered those Dogs?
Hands down, it was Bates' game on Friday. The dude was a beast. Absolutely the MVP.
Kenneth's playing defense was a great play, and probably the game changer, but over all...Houston Bates...and it wasn't even close.
Sokol was borderline horrible for much of the game. Two completions accounted for 60% of his passing yards. He was throwing like Wild-thing most of the game. We can add in a few drops by the more sure-handed WRs that didn't help his cause when he did have an accurate throw.
Bates and Woods were great. Villemez was very active. Tons of yards given up in the middle of the field but the defense tightened up in the red-zone most of the time.
Dixon was productive as always, but more times than not the play calling seems too predictable putting him at a disadvantage. Maybe it just seems that way and the blocking wasn't good. He only had 17 touches in about 60 offensive plays. His forced fumble was HUGE for us! Hope he sticks around for his senior season.
Great to get a 58yd punt instead of the average 30 yarder.
Bates getting the MVP is legit in my view.
Overall, great to earn a bowl game and bowl win. 9-5 season (with three losses that should never have happened).
