    2014 Football Year in Review

If someone said before the 2014 football season started that Louisiana Tech would win nine games, capture the C-USA West Division Title, lose to a 13-win Marshall team by a field goal in the C-USA Championship Game, and beat a Big Ten team in a bowl game in Dallas, every Louisiana Tech fan would have taken that result in a heartbeat.

This year was extremely similar to 2011, imo. We had middling expectations, began the season on a down note, and rebounded in force to get to a bowl (and of course the conference championship game). We traded the conference title for a bowl win.

... and defense carried us both years.

My favorite part of Holtz coaching is that his offense allows his defense to make a difference. Other than 2011 that will never be the case with a Dykes offense. Holtz has pointed out as much.

Keys to 2015: Pick the right QB and fix special teams.

Pretty much, and hope Diaz stays another year. There are a lot of key players coming back next season.

Somewhat related... I thought the most interesting post-bowl quote came from Diaz. He said something to the tune of the biggest plays of the game were turning our defense into offense with the Woods pick-6 and turning our offense into defense with the Dixon strip and Sokol fumble recovery. If we didn't make those two plays, we probably wouldn't have won.

I agree. I was thinking about this comparison the other day with the "best year since 88" question that was posted.

Things that make a great season:
    Winning a bowl game.
    Winning conference championship.
Being ranked in top 25 (even briefly).
    Win over top 25 team.

To me you have to check one of those boxes to be considered our best year since 88. If we can check off two or three of those boxes we will remove doubt about our best year ever.

The 2012 team created more national exposure for LaTech than any other team in history. They beat BCS teams on the road. They didn't lose to any team that didn't finish in the top 25, and those games were extremely close. It wasn't their fault they weren't allowed to participate in a bowl game.
    Have you considered those Dogs?

...and there were several players that red shirted that I hope make an additional impact on defense such as Jaylon Ferguson and the big DT. There was also a couple of LB that red shirted that hopefully will fill in nicely.

I have a tendency to look back at 2012 and think about how bad we choked, but you are talking about losing by 2 to Texas A7M (11-2), 7 in OT to Utah State (11-2) and by 9 to San Jose (11-2). The team spent 5 weeks in the top 25 and and was only a few scores away from a BCS bowl game.
To me, playing ULM in the indy bowl would have been just as big a disappointment as not playing in a bowl at all. I'm glad they tried to get something better.

2011 wasn't that far off either. There Lost by 2 to Southern Miss (12-2), by 1 to Houston (13-1), 6 to Mississippi State (7-6), and by 7 to #15 TCU in the bowl game. We did get whipped by Hawaii (6-7) 44-26.

Those were two pretty special years back to back.

It is noteworthy that three of the best years in program history have come in the last four years.

That is absolutely correct. What would we call someone who said we would lose to NSU?
