I think he almost came to Tech once before at the beginning of his career. I seem to remember our name being mentioned in Meat Market.

Man, the more I look at it Ed Orgeron would be a good fit, hate to step over Coach Giles and Coach Baker though...

Please say ST Coordinator as well. That must be a position that we fill with a full time coach. Nothing against Coach Bradford, but he shouldn't be handling both Specialists and DB's.

I imagine Holtz will take a long look at Mark Snyder which wouldn't be the worst hire. My personal pick is Kim McCloud from Bowling Green. He runs a similar D to Diaz and creates turnovers.

Just turned 63. And I don't care what he did as HC. I want a good defense. If we can get him on our budget it wouldn't be a bad hire.

He is the full time special teams coach. Every team in NCAA including Alabama and power 5 schools use their special teams coach to coach another position. You are only allowed 9 full time coaches and that is just the way it is everywhere.

Ellis Johnson has coached in the SEC for 30 years, been a DC for 18 in the SEC alone I belive and had countless top 10-15 defenses. It is hard to argue he isn't a great DC. He was terrible as HC at usm but his situation was similar to ours last year, Fedora left the cupboard bare. I doubt we go that direction but I would not have a problem if we did. He is proven commodity at DC.

I don't know who we should choose, but a Head Coach record says nothing about how good of a DC or OC someone is, so I agree with you.

Bo Pellini needs work. LSU had good defenses while he was there.

    I'd take him.

No DC experience (some HC experience though), wants back in the game, but isn't going to get the shot as DC at the big money schools without proving himself first. Great recruiter with LOTS of regional ties!

    Thoughts?
I'd love if we gave him a chance. The man is an insane recruiter and did an impressive job as the interim coach for USC a couple seasons ago. Apparently he always gains the respect of his players so I'm sure he could rally a decent defense. Holtz has been great with assistants so far so I trust whatever decision he makes

Orgeron has publicly stated that he'd take the d-line position at LSU if offered. I suspect that Tech would need to sweeten the pot significantly for Orgeron to choose the DC position at Tech over the d-line position at LSU.

This is the difficult part of your question, anyone we hire will have to settle for sub $200K money, therefore we probably get either a dud or someone that stays for only 1 or 2 seasons again. Heck if Holtz wasn't getting $500K from USF through the 2017 season, I'm not sure he would have taken the job last year for just the money Tech is paying him.
