Well they just lost their stalwart DC. They haven't developed a QB in forever, Alabama and A&M are both wrecking their recruiting, and the fine print of Chavis' contract showed that the natives are restless. There is just a lot of turmoil and coaching turnover right now in BR. Folks are acting a lot like Nebraska post Osborne.
Not to defend LSU, but a lot of this is wishful thinking. They just hired defensive coaches that are probably better than Chavis and had a top ten recruiting class that was better than Texas A&M, Notre Dame, Penn State, Oregon, Oklahoma, Baylor, and TCU to name only a few. If a team has top ten recruiting seasons year after to year, nobody is "wrecking" their recruiting.
But remember, a lot of the recruiting rank has more to do with *whos* doing the recruiting. If we had signed Bama's class (or whoever was #1 this year), we might be "ranked" but sure as hell not top 10, because they didn't sign with the school a priori determined to be better.
I totally agree with this. Teams like Oregon, Baylor, TCU, and Boise State rarely (if ever) have top ten recruiting classes but the players they sign are high caliber and their teams are winners. It's largely an unknown fact concerning who had the best current recruiting class if you are talking about something other than "what's on paper".
There is no better defensive coordinator than John Chavis in the SEC. The guys they got are strong recruiters, however I don't think that talent has ever been a problem at LSU. Texas A&M among others have made inroads into the State of Louisiana and are holding onto more in-state recruits now that they are in the SEC. Make no bones about it LSU has been hurt by both A&M and Alabama recruitiment wise. Do you think Speedy Noel would have gone to Texas A&M 5 to 10 years ago? Point being, LSU will always be LSU and they are gonna spend whatever they have to make sure the 80s or 90s never happen again, but there is a lot of turnoil under the surface in Baton Rouge right now.
+1. Miles' lack of QB development over the years is starting to manifest itself, imo. It's not just A&M and Bama either. To a lesser extent, Ole Miss and Arkansas have had some effect on LSU's recruiting. And yeah, so they still have a "Top 10" class every year. LSU could sign 25 golden retriever puppies and still have a top 15-20 recruiting class according to the rivals/scouts/24-7s of the world.
LSU's problem is coaching. They have all the athletes any football program could ever dream of, but the vast majority of their "stars" are complete boneheads who value themselves over the team. Not so much a problem on the defensive side of the ball as offense, which Miles lords over. He's just not a good coach. I have a family full of tigger fans who have been screaming this for 4-5 years now. He's overstayed his welcome in BR and it's about to really show if he can't find a QB to pull him from the fire. 2-3 more seasons of Jennings/Harris/insert woefully inept QB here and he's toast. They're not going to put up with 8-4 every year down there.
Add to all their other problems the fact that Les told every Louisiana player that didn't sign with LSPoo to "go to hell" at their sign shindig.
Telling 17 year old kids to go to hell is a bit much. I'm not saying the school is going to fall into disrepair, but they are about to go through some big changes. I'd bet Les wishes like heck he had taken that ticket to Ann Arbor.
Are you being serious? You don't see telling a kid to go to hell because he signed with an out of state school as bad behavior for a coach? So what does he think about the out of state kids that he brings in to sign with lsu? Does he hope for damnation on them or is it ok as long as they go to lsu?
