Hell will freeze before a single university is closed in this state. Every school except LSU will be gutted, but not closed. We'll always have Southern and Grambling weighing down Louisiana's systems of higher education, and LSU-A, S, and E aren't going away either.

The student loan bubble could be a major crisis. Thats a lot of money with no collateral.

Student loans have artificially inflated enrollments as well as the tuition prices and fees at all universities. These universities all face a day of reckoning if the Fed is ever forced to cut back on grant and aid spending. We could see enrollments at universities across the country drop 25% or more.

    I remember your postings.

I had to research your signature. Now I'm trying to figure out what you meant while considering your usual sarcasm.

The serious question is how much do we inflate?

It looks like the average public tuition has caught up with neighboring states and the gap at Louisiana Tech is closing

I don't remember your post, but I bought a book (more like a research paper, since it is only about 50 pages long) on Amazon about two years ago that detailed the coming problems.

It is titled, "The Higher Education Bubble" and was written a guy named Glenn Reynolds. He documented how colleges and universities have become more and more addicted to government money for the last hundred years or so, and it clearly can't last. Student loans are only one part of the problem, according to Mr. Reynolds. He says that in order for higher education to justify it's cost, there needs to be more actual learning as a return on investment. But, with harder classes and higher expectations from professors comes lower enrollment. It has been a couple of years since I read it, but it was interesting.

Sooner, your quote, "what can't go on, won't" is actually used in that book a few times. Have you read the same book?

I have not read his book, but I read his blog several times every day. He is a law professor at Tennessee. I am a huge Glenn Feynolds fan. His blog is Instapundit. I have quoted him a lot on this board and I sure I will again. I can't say for sure he is the first I heard discussing the education bubble, but I can say he is by far the best source now.

Due to budget cuts, our public universities are being forced to become self-funded. I'm not sure that this is a bad thing in the long run.

It isn't a bad thing at all. As my wise father, God rest his soul, used to say, what the government touches, it f{*\ks up. I think we will soon find that the free market will not bear the number of universities that now exist. The easy to obtain student loan money created an artificial demand for universities, but not a corresponding demand for college graduates. Now that the student loan industry is in crises, that easy money will dry up. Only the universities that provide bang for the buck will survive.

It is a good thing. The marker is adjusting. It always seems bad when it is going down. The socialist, including the Republican Party, will blame the free market for the government made crises. They will use the crises to further centralize power. We, the people, will go on with our lives because we have our bread and games. One day we will all wake up to what Greece is going through now. The government will just seize our bank accounts. What can't go on, won't.

BTW, someone questioned UNO being on the "list of 4" due to their quality academics. No one is questioning that. UNO made the list cuz they are a financial train wreck, just like Grambling, Southern (the whole system), and Nicholls. But, I agree, if possible UNO needs to be saved. Just someone with a hint of fiscal sense should be in charge of that campus.

P.S. I don't trust our federal government one tiny bit.
